Speeches at late afternoon weddings

overtherainbow, 3 March, 2011 at 13:33 Posted on Planning 0 11

Our daughter is marrying at 3pm and is running straight through into the 'evening' do rather than having a separate session as such and they want to have the speeches before the meal rather than after. Main reason is that they don't want guests turning up for the 'evening' session half way through the speeches. Meal is at 5.30/6.pm Evening session guests are arriving at 7.30. What's everyone else doing with late afternoon weddings?

Hi, we are getting married at 2.30pm but the ceremony and reception are at the same place and we are only having one set of guests so thankfully don't have the time constraints of getting everything done before evening guests turn up!

We are provisionally looking at doing the speeches before the wedding breakfast too though as we are having afternoon tea at 4pm and BBQ at 7.30pm so otherwise it would be about 9pm before speeches and wouldn't want those that have to make them be waiting that long!

I have been to a few weddings now where the speeches are before the wedding breakfast though so it isn't that unusual.

We're getting married at 2.30pm and having speeches after dinner but before the evening guests arrive. Our dinner is at 4.30 (I think), speeches at 6.30 with evening guests at 7.30. Our venue told us to leave a half hour buffer during dinner for delays, etc.

Oh that's good - thanks! They're marrying and eating at the same venue too. I know that she doesn't like conforming to 'normal' LOL but haven't heard of speeches before food before so that's a relief plus Dad is absolutely terrified so he wants it over and done with so he can enjoy his food Smiley winking

We're cutting back on the wedding breakfast time, and saving the speeches until the evening so all our guests can enjoy them.

Our ceremony is at 3.30pm so reckon wedding breakfast will be done by 8ish. So we are inviting our evening guests for 8 or 8.30pm and there is a bar and lounge area they can wait til we are done if it runs over.

We are having the speeches before the meal, to be honest this has been the case at most of the weddings I have been too and I think its a better idea. It means the guys can get them out the way and then relax and enjoy their meal.

I think a lot of people have the speeches before the meal nowadays. Our wedding is at 3.00pm but we are just having a buffet reception so I plan for the speeches to be before the buffet is served so then everyone can relax (including me as I'm going to make a speech too!)

Echoing what's already been said really - we're having the speeches before the meal so that the boys can get them out of the way and relax. Tradition is to have them after the main course and before dessert, but I don't want them stressing throughout the meal.
