Splendid names from the beautiful baby competition

Iris, 15 September, 2008 at 21:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 224

In my local paper. I must be a terrible name snob as I am wincing at some of these

Tia'H-La'Shae, Italee, Dior, Mckayla, Cordi-Leigh, Porsha, Sharntay, Mazee, Dylanjay, Charlierai, Ne'Vaeh, Kaydee-Leah, Shanelle, Meadow (boy), Elleigh-Jai, Aarrysun, Neo, Bryleigh (girl), CJ, K-J,Jaylum, Paigan-Tai, two Brooklyns etc etc

I am aware that it makes me sound judgemental and that every parent has the right to name their child as they see fit. But honestly. And as for the number of Mr T style gold chains and ear rings (boys too)...

(does anyone know how you'd say "Tia'H-La'Shae?)

Have to say Aarrysun made me laugh - presumably a contraction of 'Arry, me ol' son ?

It's the names what are pronounced the same as otherwise normal names but spelt completely wrong what irritate me eg Aarrysun & Harrison

    Tia Lashay I think.

It's time to retell my stories of great names for kids.

    1) Heard in Belfast in broad (read common) accent - "Tiff'ney, Whitney, Britt'ney, Courtney, come on".

    2) Twins when mine were born - Daniel (fine) and Cookie (oh dear).

    3) Someone I know who's called her kids Jamie-Lee, Demi-Lee & Dani-Lee.

    4) My friend's mum who was on a course with some Registrars who told of their favourite names ever - the lovely Chlymidia and her charming brother Lasagne.

    5) In a much more middle-class way of making your kids miserable, Loki and his brother Orphee. Pretentious, lui?

Well, I'll join you on the snob bench then.

Whenever I see a name along the lines of Mazee and Aarrysun I wonder if the parents are deliberately using an "alternative" spelling, or if they're just spelling phonetically/think it's correct.

I see all the names quoted so far and raise you a 'Levonelle' as a middle name.

I know, I've told that one so many times on here.....

My next door neighbours younger sister is called Heavenly and my nephew has a boy in his class called Levi. I had to ask what his surname was.

Loki is the Norse God of Mischief, innit?

I think/assume Orphee is an even more pretentious version of Orpheus.

Seriously. My friend's mum told me that the Reg had tried to dissuade them by explaining that chylamidia is an STD etc, but they weren't to be told as they liked the name. When they came back the next year with Lasagne, they explained that it was their favourite food and a beautiful name to boot.

My (v unPC friend's mum) said they were " a bit simple looking".

    No shit Sherlock.

The best I can offer to this is a pair of twins we saw recently, named Luke (fine) and Anakin (taking the Star Wars obsession a leetle bit far).

Chlymidia? Surely the registrar should have vetoed that one?

I see from another post that he tried, although I think he should have said 'no way' (if they can).

Mrs Jess <shakes head> haven't you read every story, myth and other work of literature, great or small? Come on, you're letting the side down ?.

The references to the mythological names is making me think of the hayooge thread on BT last week!

Someone I work with now said she once knew of twins named Dolce & Gabbana!

I'll be honest, I know of Orpehis and his Underworld, but haven't any clue what he does/did there - is it like an Octopuss's garden. It's likely to be pretentious, knowing one of the parents.

My knowledge of Loki comes from watching The Mask. ?

Am cultural desert, so move along on the iliterate and ignorant bench...

That just reminded me of a work colleague of MrJ who called his son Luke, middle name Skye and you can guess what his surname was.

Hideous. I always enjoy looking at the new Yr 7 intake for ridiculour names. This year we have a Cymone (Simone, presumably) and a Kari-Ann (Carrie-Anne? Kari spelt that way to me is hari kari.)

In our school, there's a family - there are two families of cousins I think. They are called Jamie-Lea, Bobbi-Joe, Danni-Marie, Wesley and Zack. The grandmother apparently likes line dancing. Ick.

When we went to register Evie, the registrar told us of a child named Atilla. ATILLA! I ask you. WTF? and I know I have mentioned the Clampitts, the brother-cousins WTP saw in Lancs. somewhere - T-Jay. What does the T stand for? Nothing. It's like T-shirt. The cousins' mothers were identical twins. They all shared the same father. They were all within a year group, or in the same year group in school. Oh yes.

IIRC Orpheus went to the underworldlooking for his dead love, there was soemthing about a harp, something about bribing Cerberus (hound of hell and favoured pet of GCSE Latin Pater in chief Caecilius) and maybe the undead boatman with honey. Lots of wailing and tragedy I think.

I have been moved to post for about the third time ever. Chav idiots lumbering their offspring with the most stupid and ludicrous names should be stopped. Sterilisation is the answer. How about M'ron or Cr'etin as suggested names?

Going to change my sign on to Mr Judge-mental....

That's right, he persuaded Pluto to let Eurydice (wifey) go on condition that he didn;t look back to check she was following, but he did, and she re-died. He lived his life in mourning then got ripped to pieces by some crazy women. Happy days.

I bet you knew all that already and now I just look pretentious ?

Snort. Lochia. That's brilliant. maybe she could have a brother called Fundus? And a cousin called Eclampsia?

Those ones with apostrophes in are awful names, and I don't mind nailing my colours to the mast on that. Perhaps actually 'Apostrophe' would be a good name for a child?
