in my local paper. I must be a terrible name snob as I am wincing at some of these Tia'H-La'Shae, Italee, Dior, Mckayla, Cordi-Leigh, Porsha, Sharntay, Mazee, Dylanjay, Charlierai, Ne'Vaeh, Kaydee-Leah, Shanelle, Meadow (boy), Elleigh-Jai, Aarrysun, Neo, Bryleigh (girl), CJ, K-J,Jaylum, Paigan-Tai,...

I am aware that it makes me sound judgemental and that every parent has the right to name their child as they see fit. But honestly. And as for the number of Mr T style gold chains and ear rings (boys too)...

(does anyone know how you'd say "Tia'H-La'Shae?)

There were also a lot of Braydens, Kaydens, Jaydens, Kodys, Kaycees etc etc. Lots of baby girls with those pony tails that stick up vertically-sort of trainee Croydon facelifts.

That's my sister's name, but I can assure you she was named long before the pill (and even before Yasmin Le Bon became famous!) I do think its funny now though!

I seem to remember reading an article about British nurses in Africa who had to persuade mothers not to call babies Vagina, Epesiotomy and other 'pretty' names the heard in the delivery room.

Puss you will appreciate the Feebee that was in our local paper ?

Baby of the Year is one of our favourite times to buy the local paper. We can guess what areas of the city certain children come from, poor little buggers.

One of our cats is called Loki. Norse god of mischief and, in the film Dogma, an angel of destruction. Mischevious and destructive - seemed ideal for a kitten, maybe less so for a child.

I'm a little ashamed to say it......ah well fuck it. I culled a friend because she named her little girl 'Genie' . Honestly! Why would you do that.

When I was in hospital after having my son, the lady in the next bed had had twin boys. She called them Atlantic and Pacific. Only she kept calling Pacific "Specific" then giggling in a very slappable way. Fortunatley she was discharged within the day - she was too numb for words.

[wail] Clara has one of those, although we generally tie it so it isn't straight up as much as possible. She has to have one due to stupid hair that falls in her eyes any other way. Is there no hope for my baybeh? Poor little sod is doomed isn't she ?. Thankfully she has a (mostly) normal name.

Oh and shiny, I am shuddering at Feebee. Stoopid spelling.

I have a complete hatred of name-Lee names! Mainly because that's our surname and some people keep sticking Alice-Lee on invites ? I suppose it's because there are two Alice's in her class so they use their surnames as well but it gets on my nerves.

Now I think Levi's a lovely name, but it's out because of all the jeans/common name associations. H treated a Skye Walker - oh dear. And I taught a Holly Wood - I mean, why would you. Even worse now than when she was born - films and a naked minge, poor girl.

Levi is very popular where we live. Kind of wannabe travellers name. Much like Sammie-Jay and Lilly-Mae, again very popular. Funny thing is real travellers use biblical names like Caleb & Zachary, or Mary or Elizabeth.

A friend of a friend has named her daughter Betsy-Belle.

Heidi sports a pineapple most days too, her hair's a nightmare! H thought she would look really common ? but thankfully she just looks cute.

I remember once giving Honey's name to someone so they could write her name on a badge. We were handed a sticky label with 'Hunny' on it... ?

Some of these are hilarious! There is a family around here with 3 girls- Kaci-Leigh, Aimee-Leigh and Demi-Leigh. The mother is pregnant again. I am keeping my fingers crossed for another girl- Dairy-leigh.

Indeed - please don't post a fourth time if you're going to make vile comments like that.

I love the name Loki but we're a mischievous bunch enough without that connotation (esp the Dogma one for us) ?

Marmalade Atkins - i agree not all babies are beautiful but it doesn't half make you paranoid about your own. I mean, I thought he was/is gorgeous and people said so at the time but maybe they're all just trying to make me feel better. I wish there was a code so you know whether or not they were lying - ooh lovely bib! ?

I don't think he was being entirely serious.

And yes, this trend for ridiculous names does seem to be associated with particular ethnic and socio-economic groups - the poorly educated ones. I'm sure it makes me a bad person, but I'd think negatively about an interview candidate if they had one of those names - it speaks volumes about the sort of upbringing / value system they're likely to have.

All my examples were from the caucasian babies, I didn't put any from other ethnic groups in case they were actually perfectly normal names with cultural/ethnic meaning. Many of them seemed ludicrous too though.

well i know that - just concerned that 'nice pram' is the same as 'nice flowers'

I hate it when people spring these sorts of names on you at baby group etc and you feel like you have to react.... I generally say 'oooh - thats unusual' then go off and find someone normal to talk to ?

my mums neighbour has a son called T-J - doesn't stand for anything - is his full name.

I went to school with a lad called Presley - never heard it anywhere else til i realised there is a boy in victoria's reception class called Presley. The Presley I knew had a sister called Am-Perie which i thought was odd....
