in my local paper. I must be a terrible name snob as I am wincing at some of these Tia'H-La'Shae, Italee, Dior, Mckayla, Cordi-Leigh, Porsha, Sharntay, Mazee, Dylanjay, Charlierai, Ne'Vaeh, Kaydee-Leah, Shanelle, Meadow (boy), Elleigh-Jai, Aarrysun, Neo, Bryleigh (girl), CJ, K-J,Jaylum, Paigan-Tai,...

I am aware that it makes me sound judgemental and that every parent has the right to name their child as they see fit. But honestly. And as for the number of Mr T style gold chains and ear rings (boys too)...

(does anyone know how you'd say "Tia'H-La'Shae?)

Me and H were discussing something similar about name associations. We were saying that you could basically hear almost any name and immediately hazard a reasonably good guess as to which part of our home town they came from. Its quite interesting actually the little enclaves of names you seem to get!

I think thats why I finally culled my friend TBH. Looking back we were such different people with nothing in common and our different views used to wind each other up.

No way she could ever breastfeed because it would ruin her tits, I was a "weirdo for wanting to do it when formula was better because it contains more vitamins and helps them to sleep better" - and yes that is a direct quote

There are other examples but I won't bore you now. I think that her insistance on giving such a silly name to her child and risking labelling her for life was just the final nail in the coffin.

no he wasn't. i told him he was bound to wind someone up, especially by using the word 'chav' but he said he didn't care ?

i think the irony of stoooopids being able to procreate easily is not wasted on him at the moment. and i bet i'll be called vile and judgemental for saying that. and hey, i don't care either ?

I love it when the bonniest baby competition is run in our local paper. It makes me laugh so much. Personally, I would never ever enter any child of mine in this competition, but that's mainly because when I worked for a Family Solicitor we would go through the paper and be able to find at least 20 children every year who were clients of ours and in care!

I'm not "wound up," I just think poorly of your partner. Excuse me for thinking that eugenics and sterilization aren't particularly funny topics.

oooh, i remember reading about them in woman magazine

'someone said saab as a joke but we thought it was lovely'

'well when we had a boy we could hardly call him john, could we?'

    or similar

You don't think there's a possible reason that I (and others) think a clearly flippant comment is beyond the pale?

Maybe you should look up "eugenics" in a dictionary and a history book and then pass it to your H then get back to me.

It's less than a 100 years ago that people thought that certain people shouldn't be allowed to breed and made it so. And no, that's not just restricted to interwar Germany. It's a vile vile concept and it's horrid to hear people jesting about it.

Just thinking about it, I wonder if these sort of names are becoming more and more popular - when the "bonny baby" competition is in our paper you would be hard pushed to find anything other than Makayla, Maddison, Demi-Leigh, Kayla-Lee, etc etc. You'd be really, really hard pushed to find a Sarah or a Charlotte for example.

I can't decide whether this is a reflection on the popularity of names or whether its just who enters the competitions!

I wouldn't be surpsised if the people giving out the silly names are also more likely to be the people entering baby competitions.

i've googled it. and i'm absolutely pmsl that you're comparing someone, who doesn't know the hitched 'vibe' and who's posted a bit of a venting, throw away comment, which by no means was meant genuinely to a nazi. and i assume you're calling him judgemental. wowee.

Mmm, as awful as it sounds I could hazard a guess at where most of them live too

To be fair, KTC, you're quick enough to jump on people yourself. I don't think you can talk in this instance and I think if it was another 'newbie' on the forum who had made the same comments about things like sterilisation, I'd imagine more than just Zeb and BOBK would have responded negatively.

and its the fact he is my H that made me think noone would take it seriously...

he did ask me to edit if i wanted as he knows what this place means to me, but stupidly (or maybe as i was a bit zonked on pills) i didn't think people would actually think he meant it

anyhow, i'll tell him not to post again

I hope the names are a reflection on the competition enterers rather than representative of society as a whole. There was one baby Nigel which was also a bit unusual for a baby these days but at least it is a real name. Oh and a baby called Judge,

I think this is very much the case. We get a LOT of baies through the studio and the names vary wildly, according to demographics.
While I don't really like the weirder names/odd spellings just for the sake of it, I would never judge someone on their name, just because it points to a certain type of background. I actually find the concept quite scary, possibly because I wouldn't want to be judged on my own background.

Forgot to say, I am with Zeb and Kittens, if Mr C was trying to be funny, he fell way short of the mark for me, and veered into offensive. Which isn't to say he shouldn't post, obviously

So he and you both knew he was being offensive but because he's married to a well-known Hitcher you think that would be ok?

And I deliberately phrased my reply to make sure I wasn't comparing him to the N-word, actually; I'm saying his comments are inapproprate because they're making light of a really offensive subject.

Fair point Lois, and on re-reading my post, maybe I came across a bit too strongly.

What I mean is, that people make all sorts of judgements about others all the time (i think it is disingenuous to suggest otherwise), and that, rightly or wrongly, seeing certain names written down conjures up images of the person concerned, whether they be Shazznaie Ohurugu, or Rupert Trumpington-Smythe.

he should post what he likes - but this has never been a place when 'oh it was only a joke' passes as an excuse for saying something so utterly offensive regardless of who their partner is

i dont want to bang on at you because i know you have your own stuff going on - but i am sure that i am not the only person who finds this concept and anything to do with it deeply upsetting for their own personal reasons

Yes, I totally agree. Having just been through the recruitment process, some of the most fun has been out of taking the names and imagining what the people will be like.

nnnnnoooooooo. the eugenics thing didn't even occur to me as i didn't for a second think anyone would take that seriously. it was just a stupid comment. i apologise for that, but as i said you're taking the comment too seriously. i don't even think he's aware of the concept of eugenics, or if he is he certainly wouldn't seriously apply it to people with shyte taste in baybeh names.

i thought people would be offended by the use of the 'ch' word tbh

oh, and as the first thing i saw when i googled 'eugenics' was 'nazi' i can't help but think thats what he was being compared to...

You don't need to know the word for it to be aware of the concept though - he MUST be aware of that, surely?
It is a bit weird that he feels so strongly about baby names that he is moved to post vitriol, when he's not a regular poster. So it's not destined for a good reaction from all that he did so.

vitriol is a bit stong. it was just a stupid comment. ok a bit ill thought out i will admit. i'd hardly marry a man who genuinely thought like this would i?

i can only guess at why he reacted to the baby names thing, but if i posted my theory i'd probably be accused of woe-is-me-ness

Having had difficulty conceiving and having had a miscarriage, I think I can understand where the comment might have come from. It's not an excuse, but it's a reason I can understand.
