spray tan disaster...advice needed

weedancer, 4 March, 2009 at 14:23 Posted on Planning 0 17

I had my first ever spray tan a few weeks ago as i wanted a practice for the wedding. I am fair skinned and really wanted to have a glow and some colour for the big day in May! Anyway, it was a complete disaster- orange, disgusting, streaky etc... after a few days i looked like a fish, all scaley and my hands and feet looked so dirty- it was just so disappointing, i wanted something fairly discrete so i could look a bit healthier on the day.

So i just called the shop and asked what type of spray tan they use and they said Creative Fake It. So beware of that type ladies.

Can anyone recommend a type that can be applied for a light tan look, not orange! And if you're paisley/Glasgow based, any recs???

Help greatly appreciated...xxx

I'm just using a moisturiser with a touch of fake tan, builds up really gradually and looks natural, even on my pasty whie skin

I dont know how long you have to your wedding but i would recommend using one of them gradual tanning moisturiers like JOhnsons Holiday Skin or Dove or Olay - i have used them all and they all give a nice glow - you can get light to medium or medium to dark depending on your skin tone and then you can build it up over days,,,, only thing i would say though is the Johnsons one had a funny smell on me but other people i know use it and like the smell.

Another thing i would say is with a spray tan they rub off on EVERYTHING!! I have had it done a few times and my once white sheets got ruined!!! With the gradual tanning moisturisors they dont rub off as much on your clothes - in fact they didnt rub off at all on me unless i was really sweaty - ie at the gym!

    Hi Wee Dancer

I had a Fake Bake spray tan done. It was really lovely and lasted ages. It was done by www.stephaniemobilespraytan.com

I'm in glasgow and she came to the house to do it.

I have had a fake bake one too, and I would definitely recommend them coming to your house... I unfortunately didn't do this and decided to get the bus home and received quite a few stares... got home and saw that I looked distinctly muddy!

I'd try FB, I found it looked best 2/3 days after having it done.

Wee Dancer for that reason I'm not having a spray tan done and am going to go to the sun beds a couple of times. Yes I know it's not healthy but considering I don't go out in the sun much or ever use sun beds I'm taking a calculated risk so please nobody flame me! I will only need a couple of 5 mins sessions to have a nice glow and then I'm having a full body exfoliation the day before wedding so I'm all nice and smooth and flake free and I wouldn't go able to get this done if I have a spray tan.

So basically I have no advice but hi anyway! ?

I used the Dove summer skin (? or summer glow?) before my wedding in December and it was really natural. I didn't use it for a couple of days before hand as didn't want it coming off on my dress but because I'd kept up with it and also exfoliated like a mad woman for weeks before (exfoliating gloves in the shower!) my skin felt and looked really healthy on the day. It also didn't look too false or too dark which would have been odd as it was winter!

Good job you had it done way before!

    I like St Tropez myself.

Although I've had a few spray tans (by a machine, not a person) which have turned out really well, I'm still a bit nervous of doing that for the day. So I may become a huge hypocrite and have a few sunbeds in the last few weeks. I also see it as a mroe calculated risk, as it will only be something like 5 minutes a week for 3 or 4 weeks before, not using them week in week out for years.

I'm still undecided tbh, but not sure of a better solution at the moment.

I was a mobile beautician before moving to England. I worked with lots of tans but my favourite was Fake Bake. It has the most pleasant smell and was less prone to streaking. St Tropez is really good but leaves a funny smell on your skin.

It is def best to get someone to the house. You don't want to have to put any tight clothes on for the first few hours after applying.

Best way to remove it is with whitening toothpaste mixed with exfoliator. It tones down the streaky area to blend in with the rest of your tan. This method I have used myself. I've heard lemons work but I've never used them.

Personally I don't really go for professional spray tans so I’m not able to recommend one. I always apply my own fake tan at home.

Day to day I use Johnsons holiday skin for a gradual build up of colour and Piz Buin self tan foam on my legs where I want a darker colour. When applying I make sure I've exfoliated and shaved my legs etc beforehand (and been moisturising my skin every day in the run up) and I wear self tan mitts on both hands which I bought from Boots - sometimes they have them on offer at half price!

Once I've applied the tan I use my regular body moisturiser to blend it in at key points, ankles, feet, knees and hands. Another tip a friend gave me was to use a wet cotton wool pad to wipe off any excess from your elbows as it really sticks there.

For special occasions I highly recommend L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Airbrush-Effect Self Tanning Mist. It comes in two shades and they do a specific version for your face. This stuff is fake tan in a spray can and dries almost instantly so you can get dressed straight away and it is so easy to apply - I've even managed to fake tan my own back without help by bending over at the waist and spraying over my shoulders. The ultimate test was when I asked my other half to apply it to my back for me once and he didn't mess it up - brilliant. The cans are about £10-15 each but do last a while if you 'save them for best'.

Another rec. for Dove. I'm fair, and if I just use that for a few days it makes me look as though I've atually seen daylight in the last year.

Smells a bit like wet digestives though.

I use Sienna-X spray tans......have had fake bake before which was good but the Sienna-X tans smell lovely and tropical and wear off really evenly. They use it on Gladiators and Strictly come dancing........

Im not from Paisley/Glasgow so don't know of anyone near there but if u look on their website, it tells u who does it where. https://sienna-x.co.uk/Find-a-Sienna-X-Spray-Tan-Salons-Therapists/Scotland

I would recommend Guinot tan, only because i worked with it for so long. It was by far the mot fool-proof tan I have come across. The problem is - it is exclusive to salons - so you would need to find one that offers the Guinot range. If you get a light application, it will come out as a lovely glow & tends to wear off evenly. The smell isn't bad either, kinda caramel/chocolate (according to ex-clients).

With any fake tans, you should really make sure your skin is in good condition before using. You should exfoliate & moisture very regular. This will ultimately decide whether your tan lasts or not & how evenly it wears off.

BTW - it is a rub on tan - not a spray

    ?

I'm actually thinking of getting a fake jobby too but being fair (in honesty I'm almost blue I'm so white!) I want it to be natural... might try St Tropez as heard thats good but if not will be hitting the 'wet digestive' cream.

I am another one for the sunbed approach, although not excessively..... I will need about 8 minutes to even out my colour and that's it!

I am as pale as a pale thing X

I'm another who's going to go for a sunbed or two. I used to use the johnson's moisturiser quite regularly but as others have mentioned, it does have a funny smell! I'm too scared to try a spray tan in case i look like an oompa loompa!
