Static caravan owners - educate me please

mrsbunny, 16 April, 2009 at 20:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I have got it into my head to research static caravans although I am thinking we probably can;t afford one for at least a couple more years. I know there are site fees to pay and imagine these will vary hugely depending on location etc. As a guide can anyone tell me roughly what their yearly fee is? We would be looking in North Yorkshire/County Durham I would think. What about insurance, do you have to get this individually? What else if anything is there to pay for? Water/gas/electric? Anything else I should take into account would be really useful. Oh, and I see that some sites have age limits on the caravans? What happens when your caravan reaches this age, is it effectively worthless then for resale?

We have a caravan at Flambrough (near bridlington), Ground rent is £1850 this year, Insurance about £150, we pay for gas bottles and electric seperete, Gas is about £18 a bottle, and we have about 4 a year on, electric you buy in tokens, not sure how much we use, suppose we put about £14 a month on if we go a lot. Our site has an 18 year age limit, think that is about standard. Some a bit more some less.

    Hope that helps

My folks have a caravan at arnside in cumbria (south of the lakes), im not a 100% on the fees but i think last years was about £1600, they cant have a caravan older than 15 years (changed it about 6 years ago) the site fees i think include, water and electric but gas is extra on top of that but not sure how much they use as unfortunatly its not used a great deal.

    hope this helps a bit

Thank you! Site fees actually aren't as much as I thought so that's good.

PIL have a static van in Mid Wales. Site fees about £2k pa. Gas cylinders are about £16 each and they use about 3 a year. Electric & Water are on a meter. Van age limit is about 16 years.

Friends have a van in a fairly big site in North Wales. Site fees £5kpa, but they have a kids club, gym, swimming pool, restaurant, bar, cabaret, games room etc. Van age limit is 10yrs.

Thanks for the extra info, it's really helpful. It's definitely something I'd love to do but not sure if it's the right time as financially we could afford it more easily in a couple of years I think. Also it has just occurred to me that I'd need to think about our pets if we were going to be away a lot over the summer - I'd have to factor in getting someone to see to them. I'm going to try to price some sites in the area though.

We've been talking about buying a caravan in the future - it's interesting to see the costs involved. I had no idea that there would be a limit on the age!

Yes I wondered why the prices of caravans drop so dramatically as they reach 8-10 years or so, obviously as many places won't let you have it on their site!
