Stinky cheese fridge - any ideas?

baublegirl, 24 October, 2008 at 12:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

My H in his wisdom bought a heyooge piece of stilton last weekend and has been nibbling it all week. Consequently our fridge now smells as if something has died in it - moreso for me because I'm pg and so have a nose as sensitive as a geiger counter.

I've put a cut lemon in there to try and deoderise it a bit, but does anyone have any other ideas for getting rid of the cheesey smell? Needless to say the offending article has now been fully consumed

Thanks

Some bicarbinate of soda crystals in a dish will take the smell away apparantly - worth it for the nice cheese though

Hmm don't think I've got any of those.

Got normal baking bicarb (about a tablespoon left) - would that work?

Why do I keep thinking that a peeled potato would be good? That's to get salt out of over-salted soup isn't it? ?

Half a pot of bicarb open in the fridge absorbs odors, but maybe too late. You can wash the fridge out with bicarb and water and maybe lemon juice I seem to remember. Then rinse with cold water - that will get rid of any smell. Like mouldy gag smell when you've forgotten to leave the fridge door open while it's not being used over 6 months..

And make him do it. I remember the pg gag factor.

Especially since you can't eat the Stilton. He has made many grave and almost unforgivable errors there.

Some vanilla essence left in a small bowl for a few days or so should help.....

    Thanks Daisydaisy and Campergirl.

Will let him know he has a job when he gets in tonight. Such a shame he has a hangover and probably will be gagging as badly as me ?

Instant coffee (the granules - don't dissolve them) work well. Might be worth putting them in there all the time to absorb odours. I keep mine in an infuser (of the one-cup type) to stop them going everywhere if they get knocked over.
