Street food

Kelly, 29 July, 2023 at 16:07 Posted on Planning 0 8
Hi, we are looking at having street food vans for our food at the reception.
Does anyone have experience of this, like what works/doesn’t? Do I need more than one van? Do I need ‘inside’ food as well? Am I overthinking this? 😂
Any advice and recommendations welcome!! X

Have you seen a BBC series on at the moment called "The Ultimate Wedding Planner"? In the third ep they had a fish & chip van. It didn't go well and guests were queuing over 45mins to be served.

I'd speak with different companies to see how many people they can realistically serve in a certain timeframe. More than one van would be nice, to give people with different tastes/dietary choices a few options.

Also, do you have a plan B should the weather be horrific?

I wouldn't give too much credence to TV as they create angst and fake problems for effect.

But Emma does have a point about how quickly they can serve, I suppose its all about having a load of fish ready to go, they probably also need to serve on a side table which would speed things up rather than serving it all out of a little window.

I have seen chip vans for the evening food and they did not seem to have queues but that is slightly different to day food as in the evening its slightly more spread out when people want the food,

I think another option like piza van with the chip van would help.

As for inside food I think its fine to just stick with the vans - people do not have to eat outside.

In my experience, street food trucks can work great for receptions because they bring a casual, fun atmosphere and guests love the variety and interaction.

The number of trucks depends on the number of guests and the type of food you want to offer. Sometimes one well-stocked truck with a specific menu is enough, one of the most popular street foods right now is arepa - a delicious Venezuelan/Colombian cornbread that is very versatile. I have found some great recipes, but I am still tweaking them to get the perfect texture and flavor.

If you have tried arepas or have your own favorite street food dishes, be sure to share your tips or recipes - I love to hear what others like!

    Hi Kelly,

Street food vans can create a relaxed vibe at a reception, especially when the menu is planned with a mix of warm comfort options and lighter choices so guests stay satisfied throughout the event. A setup with two vans usually handles queues better because guests spread out naturally, and it also gives variety without complicating service. Having a small indoor station for drinks or simple snacks helps keep things smooth if the weather shifts. A lot of couples also add a signature dip or sauce to elevate simple bites, and something like a Cow Boy Butter Recipe works well because guests can drizzle it over grilled items or bread for extra flavor. This approach keeps the food experience fun, flexible and easy for everyone.

“Hi Kelly! Street food vans can be a really fun and unique option for a wedding reception. I’d recommend at least 2 vans if you have a larger guest list, so queues move quickly. It’s also good to have some indoor or sit-down options for guests who prefer a more traditional setup. The key is variety — maybe one savory and one sweet option — and checking that the vans have proper licenses. You’re definitely not overthinking it, planning ahead makes the day smoother!
