Stumped on fancy dress idea's...

sazd, 1 May, 2009 at 09:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

I have a fancy dress party next Saturday night. The theme is "what did you want to be when you grew up"

Ideally I don't want to spend much money so one thought I had was to wear my wedding dress and say all I wanted to do was get married (not true!) or say a wedding planner. Is this a rubbish idea? My sisters think so!

I know everyone will be doing the usual - doctors, nurses etc

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Sombre suit / all black outfit and a top hat if you can find it - tell them you wanted to be a funeral director?

But what did you want to be when you grew up?

That's the thing, I didn't ever think I want to be this or that (also fell into my career from the age of 16). When I was really young I used to say a judge, but I want to look good as well as dressing up. Not asking much am I?

Can you be a sexy judge? Wear the judges wig and a black minidress, and tell strangers you'll punish them for being unlawful?!

To be honest if find that whole sexy dressing up a bit naff. I've been looking on eBay and some of the costumes look like Ann Summers outfits.

Had a quick look at judge outfits and that could work. That way I could wear a nice black dress under the cloak, wear the wig etc and when everyone gets pissed I can ditch the wig and cloak and look normal - you can tell I'm embracing this fancy dress thing, can't you?

Just go as yourself and say "I wanted to be me".

Air stewardess. Well that's what I wanted to be. I thought it was super glamourous.

What about getting a green kind of smock and splattering red sauce all over the front and one of the hair protectors/face masks and go as a surgeon?

    Thanks for the replies....
Tah Dah - Think my husband is going for that. You can buy limbs from eBay!
Eda - My mate works for BA and I did think about asking for her uniform, but I was be too scared I would wreck it.
Do you think the wedding dress is a no no? If so I think it will have to be a judge.

I think the wedding dress is a terrible idea, sorry.

Air hostess is a good one. You could just wear a little suit and a scarf, heels, put your hair up and carry some props (a tray of gin and tonic minatures would be my choice ?)

Or film star/popstar? Ballerina? Show jumper?

Ooh no sorry, I meant wear your own sexy black dress not one of the "sexy" costumes from online, I agree that they're rather Ann Summers and naff.

I love this idea. Good luck with whatever you choose. I love fancy dress but realise it's not for everyone!

Knownowt - Ha, thanks for your honesty .... my mates agree with you, I was just looking for any excuse to wear it again and it's free!

Sure I have a black skirt suit in the wardrobe, could even by a wee hat from one of the fancy dress sites. Its just the full outfits were scaring me. They are all clingy looking.

Liking the me thing too, but would you be pissed off that I had not made an effort? The girls who's having the party was pretty insistent on everyone dressing up.

I would be disappointed if I held a fancy dress party and everyone turned up looking normal but there are always a couple of people who don't bother and I would imagine any reasonable host/hostess would expect that and be ok with it. Not everyone has time or imagination to fashion an outfit and certainly not everyone can afford to buy ready made outfits.

You're still entering into the spirit of it though - you could even accessorise with a packet of Berrocca: you, but on a really good day...

How about borrowing some clothes from your mum and going as her? Doesn't every little girl grow up wanting to be like their mother? (In an ideal word of course....i know I didn't but it's an idea for fancy dress)

That suggestion has made me laugh as my mum is a mad hippy who looks like she has a fight with a clown most mornings! Could work though, as she certainly has her own "style"
