Suddenly allergic to flowers????

annandy2007, 22 June, 2008 at 11:07 Posted on Planning 0 11

Can you suddenly become allergic to things??

I've never had problems or bad hayfever until Tuesday (our anniversary) when interflora delivered me 12 red roses. They were so gorgeous i took them to our bedroom that night and the night from hell started. I couldn't breathe, very congested, etc. It never entered my head it could be the flowers until the Wednesday. Now i have moved them all over and the symptoms definitely worsen when i'm in the same room as them. Strangely though, the symptoms don't disappear when i'm nowhere near them and the pharmacist definitely said it was hayfever. So i don't really know 100% what the cause is.

I have always had flowers without problems though this is the first time i have had them from Interflora so it all seems very strange. I am relunctant to throw them away as they are so lovely and must have cost a bomb.

If i am suddenly allergic to flowers then going to have to rethink the wedding decor as h2b had his heart set on real flowers. Im having a silk wrist thing so thats ok.

Its all very strange and i feel yucky.... any thoughts

I would be very surprised if it was the roses as the only cause, they are not usually the worst culprits for hayfever normally highly scented lillies are the things that set people off.

There could be something else that started it and they may the agrivate it when you get too close. Do you have lillies in the garden and the windows open, fields around growing different crops from other years or something like that?

The fact the came from Interflora makes no difference whatsoever, almost all roses in this country come from Holland or Africa and all florist whatever organisation the y belng to will source the flowers from similar places.

If you are worried about the wedding flowers ask the florist to use flowers with no scent or pellen, it is prefectly possible to have fresh flowers that wont set you off!

    I know its very strange.

The night it started we didn't have any windows open at all, the only thing that was different was the flowers. Probably just a weird coincidence...

I avoid gardening at all costs.... so it definitely wasn't anything out there..

    Im obviously very oddd...?

Hi, i've chosen roses in my bouquet on the advice of florist as both H2B and I have terrible hayfever.

there are lots of different sources of hayfever - grass, trees, flowers etc and according to BBC weather the pollen count is pretty high across most of UK at the moment - i think you can check it on BBC website for your local area.

also all this damp, followed by windy weather is not great.

stock yourself up with antihistimine - generic is just as good as branded claritin for example, its the same drug!

    Ixx

I developed an allergy to cats when I was pregnant so it is possible for allergies to emerge out of the blue, but, like someone else has said, roses aren't normally top of the hayfever causing list (I'm a hayfever suffer too, woe is me lol). Have you contacted interflora to see if they treat their flowers with anything as it could be that or the stuff that they give you to put in the water?

Can't be much help other than recommending some anthistamines, sorry.

There's an old wives tale that people who develop hayfever do so on a 7 year cycle. Don't know how true it is, but I had hayfever for the first time when I was 14 and h2b got it for the first time when he was 21, so we fit the supposed pattern. How old are you?

Regardless of whether the 7 year thing is true, it is perfectly possible to develop hayfever and other allergies later in life. The way to tell if your symptons are an allergy or an infection is to look at your tissue/hankie after you blow your nose. If it's clear, it's an allergy; if it's green/brown/yellow, it's an infection.

Hope that hasn't grossed you out!

I have never known anyone have a reaction to the flower food you put in the water and the florist is unlikley to have treated them with anything and would not know if the grower had but again I have never come accross it.

I think it is probably an unfortunte comination of you becoming more sensitive and a few things affecting you,

Possible putting them in the bedroom agrivated it especially if th windows were not open.

Hope you feel better soon but please don't blame just the roses I am sure there is more to it than just them. I have a terrible reaction to some perfumes, it can be embarrising when a bride comes for a consultation and I satrt sneezing!

Hi Anne Marie, Oh No! How lovely of h2b though to send you roses! I suffer from bad allergies and yes they can develop suddenly. Ive been with a specialist for mine as I went from having mild hayfever to have full on nasty allergies a year ago out of knowhere. Ive also noticed Ive become less allergic to pollen and badly allergic to dust. I had Sherrie at Aisle be Yours do me silk flowers and they were stunning and very real like. I wanted to do that just incase I had a flare up as I seem to have become allergic out of knowwhere, even perfumes set me off!

Oddly enough Lillies are fine for me (even though they smell strong!) and things like roses play my nose up. My H has suddenly started getting hayfever too. xx

I suddenly started with hayfever in my late forties but not to flowers though, onlywhen I'm in the garden! I am fine with plants and flowers in the house but it's the grass that does it for me. It starts with stingy, itchy eyes and then I feel like I have a bad cold by the end of the evening but the next day I am fine! They do say though that it's not a good idea to sleep with plants or flowers in your bedroom as they do take the moisture out of the air and make it very dry - one of the reasons why hospitals ban flowers now from wards.

The pollen count this summer has been at it's highest sustained levels for aboutr 40 years.

As a result far more than the usual number of people have developed hayfever for the first time. Me among them, if you are able to take an anti hystamine you should be fine around your flowers. I can't because I'm pregnant and it has genuinely been hell, so I feel for you.

Thanks for all that.. I thought it was one of those things you either had or didn't. Thankfully its much more manageable since i moved the flowers, though symptoms haven't disappearred completely. Anti hists don't seem to do anything though - the pharmacy gave me clarityn. The nasal sprays seem to be the best though not long lasting - so any good rec's welcome

I think real flowers are out for the wedding though. Sherrie is doing me a silk wrist thing instead of a bouquet so will have to see what else we can do. It is a worry though seeing the wedding is this time next year....
