suggestions to glam up my dress?

lauralil, 20 July, 2009 at 12:10 Posted on Planning 0 18

Hey ladies!

I'm after some very honest opinions on some ideas I've had. I'm a graphic designer by trade so don't think you'll offend me if you think my ideas are crap or won't work!! Constructive criticism is there to improve something and I don't want to look like a tit so be honest!! Also I'm not in anyway good at sewing so I know nothing of what I'm considering!

I have been having serious dress wobbles over the past few weeks that saw me at my local bride shop trying on different dresses. I tried on loads and 2 that i loved were a glam strapped dress and a princess dress. I don't think the princess dress is for me if I'm really honest. I felt amazing but i just don't think its me and perhaps more glam and bling than princess is what suits me best.

oirginal dress: love how this flattens my tum (though need to wear some good underwear with as I nee to fill it up top!) but i just think its a bit plain

other dress i tried on, which i love because of the cleavage and jewels around the neck and also the shape (but not around my waist because its quite loose and ruched there and makes me look bigger than I am where as the other dress is cut assymetrically and flattens my tum)

What I did realise this weekend is how similar the body of the dress is to my original dress and perhaps there are some ways I could make it more glam.

So I was thinking of adding a single shoulder strap like this:

or some crystals onto it...the rose montee style (crystals which are mounted) maybe there is a way of incorporating them both? I would need to remove the exisiting crystals for this but shouldn't think that would be a problem

would love to hear your thoughts

Just had a look- its lovely!

i'd go for the strap- i think with the sweetheart neckline you don't need more bling- the style is pretty enough!

The 1st dress is much more flattering but I personally wouldn't add anything to it as I think it looks gorgeous as it is. ?

With a beaded strap maybe? I like it! Think it would be nice if I can match the strap with the beaded brooches on the dress

Ok honest opinion is leave the dress as is. If you feel the dress is too plain then have a fab piece of jewellery.

The strap just doesn't do it for me. The simplicity of the dress is what makes it so gorgeous.

I think you in the original dress is stunning.

I'm not overly struck with the strap or over blinginess of the neckline in the two ideas you've posted.

I think if you really had to add something then perhaps make more of the side corsage, possibly add more sparkle or a big flower and you could always get some swarovski crystals scattered around the neckline - this would look really nice, but keep them to the same size and colour, then down onto the dress (but not so much that it waterfalls down you).

As others have said possibly go for more sparkly/bigger jewellery and what about some crystals on your veil?

Some would say that my dress is plain too, here it is-

I got my dress maker to put some crystals around the bust which has really finished it off in my opinion, and gives it that extra wow factor! If you think your dress is too plain you could always take this option? Your dress is gorgeous though, and in my opinion will look very glam once you have your jewellery on etc!

Honestly? I agree with everything PG said, the simplicity of your dress is what makes it absolutely stunning, and nice jewellery will give you all the oomph you are looking for.

    Hi lauralil

I tried that dress on on Sat it is alovely dress (to glam for me but lovely).

I think it is a stunning dress and agree with others the right jewellery is probably all you need for the extra oomph your looking for.

Alternatey why not chang the dangly beads on the neck line and the beaded detail on the dress (where it catches up the material. We had a look when I was trying it and the beaded motifs are just sewn on so would be easy to snip off and change for something else maybe some little flowers or something a bit more sparkley

    Thanks again girls Smiley smile

moomin I love that dress! My bridesmaids are having that waterfall style skirt...its so pretty!

I'm thinking a few cystal rose montees sewn into the brooch details might be enough then?

And so the jewellery search begins! haha

drifter isn't it funny how you thought it was too glam and I think it not glam enough! haha

Yes you are right about the brooch details, they are just sewn on so quite easy to change

The only thought I had was that if you really had to add some sparkle somewhere on the dress, what about a wee line of diamontes down the asymetrical seam from your waist to where the brooch is?

I actually think it's lovely the way it is ?

What about something like these (if not to heavu) instead of the cream ones on the dress

    I like this one

Tyen a beautiful sparkling necklace to pick out the sparkles on the dress

I agree that the strap looks a bit wrong. I think it's the sweetheart neckline. It needs to be straight across to work.

Here's an idea for a real statement necklace. I agree with whoever said that might work.

    Or maybe something like this?

    Thanks for the suggestions girls.

I do think a chunky necklace would work, but on a smaller scale aliLindsey. That is a BIG statement necklace isn't it! haha

drifter thats gorgeous but slightly too vintage for me. I've attached a pic of the brooch detail, though you've already seen it. it looks like there are a few places I could drop in a few clear crystal rose montees to give it a bit more depth and sparkle.
