Summer weddings-wasp fear!

loves-young-dream, 17 March, 2013 at 17:57 Posted on Planning 0 11

Ok so I have an extreme fear of wasps like seriously stupidly bad! We are getting married next year September and I can't stop worrying they will ruin my day!

Anyone who had a September wedding was it ok, they weren't all over the cake and annoying everyone?!! This sounds stupid but I am seriously considering changing my date!!!!

Or I need to get hypnotised or something before then!!!! Xxx

    Is your wedding outside?

Ask the venue if they have a problem with them in the summer.

My MIL garden has loads of wasps but my parents have hardly any.

I don’t recall seeing any insects at my wedding (17th September 2011), but we were only outside for drinks, nibbles and photos.

I’m afraid you will just have to suck it up. Or yes change your date to the middle of winter.

I don't remember seeing any wasps at my wedding (10th Sept). We were outside for drinks, photos and then a bit before the evening do. It had been raining earlier in the day though, and was not very warm during the drinks reception, so maybe that was why?

28th August here, didn't see a single wasp in the couple of hours we were outside (2:30-4:30).

Thanks you've all made me feel better! I am just getting all panicky about it, having visions of wasps covering the cake and sweets and going up my dress and in my hair !! Think I may wear loads of insect repellant, lovely! Hopefully it'll rain the night before so wasps shouldn't be around, but then again this is England it'll probably rain on the day! I think I'd rather rain than wasps haha! xx

I think unless you'd be happy to have a winter wedding, there will always be the possibility of wasps.

However, I have never been to one wedding where they were crawling all over the cake etc! I don't think you need to worry about that.

We had a March wedding and had a huge one in the ceremony. I am terrified of wasps but after some stern, quiet words from my husband encouraging me not to run back up the aisle, I just ignored it until it buggered off.

Last year there were hardly any wasps --official

It was because of the previous winter 011 -012 was prolonged and very cold which decimated the hibernating wasps, experts have said it will take 3 or more years for the population to recover. It was for a while in the news, one pest controller was saying that he usually deals with -say 30 nests, only had 9.

I suppose that it is no point in telling you that the worst thing that you can do is (if one approaches) start waving your arms around .

I do have a passing interest in wasps, only as a wedding photographer, as it is so frustrating when im just about to take a bridal portrait and the dress is placed perfect and all of a sudden the bride screams and starts running off..Wasps appear later than bees and are actually at their peak at September. So if you are going to go that way and change your date June would be better than September.

They are interested in you because of your flowers, maybe a certain type of flower will not attract them, and what about looking in to your perfume - will some be sweeter than others and attract them, the other thing is when your drinks are outside with your photos, its the drinks that they are attracted to, so keep them away from where your groups are.

It has only ever happened once to me, but I photographed a lovely couple at The Great Hall at Mains several years ago.

During the reception we were outside on a fantastic sunny day and the grounds were dotted with "Lavender" ! Yes, well we all know that wasps LOVE lavender, and yes.....I was just taking the shot of the Bride and B/maids when a wasp flew straight into the Brides mouth as she laughed !!

The picture was fantastic, with all the b/maids laughing as she spat the wasp out !!

The bride wasn't that bothered and had a laugh with everyone else, but on a serious note it could have stung her inside her mouth !

Generally, if you don't bother the wasps, they won't bother you !

    Hi

Might be worth looking into hypnosis if you're really terrified of them. Also, make sure you have a fake bouquet as they're often drawn to the flowers!!

Wasps are one of the reasons we chose spring, I am petrified of them!
