Supplier etiquette

Laura, 31 May, 2022 at 18:01 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 5

How do I tell a supplier that I've chosen someone else? It was down to two photographers and we've chosen one of them so do I let the other one know I'm not going to be using them? I feel really rude not emailing them to let them know.

Thank you!

If you feel better then email them but be prepared for a response to offer discounts etc, which you may find hard to then respond to and decline

Personally if it has only been a cursory meeting to see if they are a good fit and they are not holding a date for you then I don't think they will be expecting any follow up unless is to book
They may reach out to you in time to ask if you are still interested and I would then reply at that point with a polite thanks but no thanks

I usually thank them for the information etc they have sent, but say on this occasion we have chosen to go with a different supplier. I also wanted to let people know rather than leave them hanging around. Just seemed polite!

Yes please let me know so I can underline it and not be in limbo with the booking. And more importantly delete all your emails and destroy any paperwork already acquired

There are times when I have had in depth emails and phone conversations from couples really interested - actually saying that they want to book ---- and then nothing. Not even replying to my messages asking if they need any info. I am then left thinking " I hope they don't think that they have actually booked" - as no contract or deposit has been paid.

So yes please tell emSmiley sexy

Just tell them -they will be used to this happening all the time and would much rather you were honest with them than left them wondering 'are they going to book that week or not?'

It sounds as if you really liked their work if it was between them and the photographer you picked, so I would say something like 'Thank you for taking the time to discuss our photography requirements with us. It was a difficult decision as we loved your work so much, but we have now decided to go with the other photographer on our shortlist. Thank you once again for your time.'
