Surgical Screws and Airport Security

Lady Gooner, 12 January, 2009 at 14:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Two weeks ago I managed to get thrown off a horse and break my hip in two places. I had surgery that night to fix it and I have two canulated screws fitted. I'm now hobbling on crutches and can't put any weight on it for another four weeks.

Will having these screws set off airport security? My mum has pins in her ankle but I'm not sure if she's flown since having it done. I fly quite often for work and I'm wondering if I need some sort of doctor's note to explain. I've Googled and not come up with a conclusive answer. I didn't ask at the hospital as it wasn't the first thing on my list at the time.

Anyone have any experience of this?

    Yes they will.

You can get a a letter/card to say you have a prosthesis but it doesn't actually do you much good. As you'll still end up going through the arch stripped down as far as is decent if the staff are so minded.

It can be fun if a security guard pisses you off though. ?

Not in my experience. I have a triple fused sub-talar (ankle) joint and a leg full of accompanying metalwork. At least seven large screws. Since I had the fusion done 10 years ago I have flown at least 200 times and never set off metal detector.

Not screws but my h has a cochlear implant which isa metal implant on his skull. He has a letter and a special card thingy so he doesn't have to go through the metal detectors. He's never been stripped down at all, just been patted down a bit.

I've a GK nail in my lower right leg and various supporting (and unrelated) plates, pins and screws. Bikes, eh?

Last time through Dublin was asked about what underwear I was wearing before being requested to walk through the sensor in my shorts.

I didn't elect to mention the nail, because the guy operating the machine was a twunt.

ETA:- Mate has an electronic thingy related to severe diabetes, he has a card and is excused walking through metal dtectors.

I had a screw in the top of my shin from a tibial tubercle transfer op and it never caused a problem at airport security, it didn't even make the hand scanner bleep when I was pulled aside and frisked (I think I must look dodgy as this happens a lot ?.

It was very close to the surface too, you could feel the screwhead through the skin.

Thanks for your experiences I'll see that happens, even if that means walking through in my pants ?

OK - Geek alert here ? (but I used to work for the security dept of an airline)

If the screws are titanium and I think most are, then they won't set off any airport scanners. Titanium is non-ferromagnetic - ie they do not upset a magnetic field so will not set off the acanners which are based on magnetic field detection.

Mine were ignored in the UK, but Berlin security spotted them, it wasn't a problem though
