Swallowing a fish bone (been to A&E and ENT clinic) advice please

Westy, 19 November, 2008 at 12:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

On Monday after lovingly preparing MrW a fisherman's pie - he sat down to eat it and within 2 mouthfuls had swallowed a bone.

He gagged, was sick, ate bread, drank water etc and it didn't seem to budge. A quick google suggested that it was best to go to hospital, so he went to A&E. He was there for 4 hours, had an xray - results showed nothing there (but was then told fishbones don't always show up!), referred to ENT the following morning for camera to be put down his throat. Camera showed that no bone was there.

He was given a couple of tablets for the pain (codeine and something else).

However, he is still really stuggling. He can't eat or drink anything as it hurts so much. He has said that everytime he swallows it hurts. He feels like the bone is still there. The ENT guy said that it could be that he has cut his throat and it is re-opening each time he swallows (apparently his throat was very inflammed), but it's not getting any better - and how can it when it reopens everytime he swallows? He can't take the tablets as it hurts too much to take them. I told him to try but he just can't bear the pain of swallowing them.

MrW is convinced the bone is still there (even though the camera says not). He said that whenever he swallows he can feel something scraping inside.

I don't know what to suggest. Obviously it's not good that he's not eating or drinking. We have booked a GP appointment this afternoon to see if they can suggest anything - I've said to go back to A&E but then it feels like we are going in saying: 'your doctor was wrong'.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Did it take a while to heal? What did you do about food and drink during that time? He can't even drink soup. He can't bear anything being swallowed. He's usually pretty good about being ill or in pain, so for him to be like this means he is really suffering.

I know swallowing a fishbone isn't a major thing but he's really struggling. Does anyone have any idea on what we can do next?

Ooooh, how awful! No advice here but lots of sympathy - I adore fish but am slightly phobic about bones after choking on one quite scarily years ago.

I think given how much pain he's still in I'd go back for another look tbh.

    Poor Mr W!

Having worked in ENT and currently in A&E I would suggest going back to A&E to be seen again, even if it is just to confirm that there is nothing there. Sounds awful though....

Thanks all. He's alseep at the moment (he looks so wiped out) but when he wakes up I'll suggest going to A&E.

BabyW is also ill so we are at doctors this afternoon for him and MrW's appointment is around the same time, so if a&e take ages etc then we can see the doctor.

I feel so sorry for him. We thought we had got rid of all the bones, so I feel guilty. Especially as the fishmonger asked me which bit of fish I wanted and we had discussions about bones etc (and I still went for the bit with the bones in!)
