Teeth/overbite question

29 of September of 2014 at 20:53 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Does anyone have an overbite?

I never used to have one but since having teeth removed about 7 years ago, and a wisdom tooth coming through, my teeth have moved around to the extent that my top teeth now fit right over my bottom ones, which means that they are gradually shaping the 'backs' of the top teeth, i.e. the top four ones are now a really funny shape at the back and feel quite thin. They seem to clash together quite a lot.

At my last dentist appointment my dentist was so busy rapping my knuckles over three more fillings that I need, that he didn't really mention it but I wonder if it may well start to become a problem.

Would I need a brace? The wisdom tooth taken out?

I don't have an overbite, in fact, I don't have a bite at all!

When my jaw is shut, I can fit my tongue through the gap in my front teeth. It is a bit of a problem in that I can't bite things, struggle to eat sandwiches etc. but I've learnt to deal with it.

Dentist tells me I'll need surgery to get it fixed. Err, no thanks, I can manage without it!

I have always had a bit of an overbite. It just seems normal to me - nver had braces etc. I don't particularly like it, due to the look, but I'm not prepared to pay to get it fixed, and it doesn't cause me any problems.

I wouldn't think you would need anything done, unless it is causing problems. I understand what you mean about shaping the backs of your top teeth, and I'm sure mine are rather well shaped, but it shouldn't cause too much of a problem.

I thought it was normal to have a slight overbite (as in your top teeth fall over your bottom when closed). In fact, this came up on QI the other day and the reason we mostly have overbites is because we use knives and forks whereas our ancestors' teeth met when closed because they needed them to be that way to rip meat from the bones.

S has an underbite which is very cute now but will probably need braces when she's older.

I think your teeth close together normally. What were they like before?

Yep, l have a massive one. A combination of thumb sucking and an issue with my jaw. It drives me mad and l would love to sort it out. I think l would need braces and an operation to sort it out.

Maybe you should go to see your dentist and get his opinion?
