Tell me your favourite healthy snacks

freda, 7 April, 2008 at 15:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 28

OK, I've admitted to myself that eating lots of chocolate, crisps and cake during the day is NOT a pregnancy craving, just me being greedy and having a vague excuse.

However, I look at the nice fruit in the fruit bowl and just head straight for the choccies. I ban myself from buying chocolate in the supermarket shop and give in when I see chocolate in the petrol station....

I never used to bother with chocolate really, but now I am a sahm it is so much easier to eat rubbish than when you are stuck in an office 9-5!

So, share with me your tempting healthy snacks. I need to get my diet balanced, I am pretty sure the reason I'm shattered all the time is not 100% toddler and pregnancy.

TIA ?

    Bananas and grapes.

I'm terrible with grapes. I can quite easily eat a whole bunch (particularly seedless ones) even though I know I'll get tummy ache afterwards but it's soooooo worth it.

What do you eat for your 3 main meals? Balancing those might help reduce your sugar cravings.

I eat lots of raisins, I grab a handful at home when I'm peckish and eat them one by one so they last for ages.

Jaffa oranges, multigrain ryvitas with marmite or low fat soft cheese.

Rice cakes with marmite or flavoured rice cakes.

I had a sweet chilli splendip for lunch today [:I]

You can still have chocolate, just choose more wisely to satisfy the craving, same with crisps. ie. a curly wurly is better than a mars bar, a packet of frazzles is better than a packet of McCoys

Carrot sticks. One their own or sometimes with houmuus (sp).

    Dates, they taste sooo sweet.

A pot of sweetcorn and a small tin of tuna mixed together.

I don't snack. If I get a hunger craving I'll have a cup of tea or coffee instead. I've found that I only snack when I'm bored so I'm trying to deal with that demon separately! ?

    I'm another fresh fruit fan.

Frozen grapes are also good as are dried mango slices as long as you get the right ones, some can be too hard and chewy. I also like almonds and yoghurt.(not together though!) and hummous or fat free thousand island dressing with veggies to dip.

H swears by 100 calorie packs as he empties whatever he opens so these keep him in control. I find I often just need a taste of soemthing to get rid of a craving so have a resealable bag of mini choc chip cookies at work which are 25 calories each - and a post it on them remining me that I need to run for 3 mins to work one off! It does take willpower thuogh!

Snack-a-jacks for me. There are only 100 calories in a (multi pack) bag, and I can count them in my healthy eating plan.

I would also have kiwis or satsumas, but recently every time I have bought them they have been really bitter, which has put me off.

I had the chocolate popcorn ones today, I fancied something sweet and these are all I could find in the shop I was in. I started eating them before I realised they were less than 10% fat, not less than 3%.

For some reason I ate them really quickly before I could stop myself and put them away ? I was pleasantly surprised that they were only 2 WW points per bag, wish I'd savoured them a bit more now because they were actually quite nice, not unlike M&S toffee popcorn which is really nice.

Hmm, some ideas there that I can try. I don't want the choclate to become a habit - as CBH pointed out, some of it is boredom led, so ideal for habit forming...

I'm in the lucky position that eating choclate doesn't really put the weight on (well, it does more now than it used to, but I still have a higher metabolism than most for my age). The down side of this is that I don't really have an incentive for not eating it, but I'm convinced it is making me feel more rubbish than I should be. I have no energy whatsoever, feel tired all the time.

My main meals pretty balanced. Weetabix+raisins+milk for breakfast, sandwich+yoghurt+little cake for lunch, meat+lots of veg+tatties home cooked hot meal for tea. Its in between I struggle!

Grapes sound good, so do dates. I agree, satsumas and clementines are rather tart at the moment, they aren't really in season. I may try making myself up a big bowl of fruit salad to dip into - its the preparation involved that puts me off so maybe if I make up a big bowl to last a few days...

Right, off to find some willpower now.

I eat loads of snacks - I'm more of a 'little and often' eater than big meals. I like fruit, but still get bored of it. But for some strange reason, I like it more when it is chopped up in a bowl, its more exciting or something ? I also like to sprinkle a little cinnamon over the fruit. Nuts are also good, I like nuts, raisins and choc chips from morrisons.

I also like peanut butter on toast.

I am the hugest chocoholic, and rarely go a day without eating something chocolately. When trying to be healthy, I eat nutella on toast (which according to the advert on tv is healthy enough for kids!). Dark chocolate is also good, as well as being delicious and a lot more 'chocolately' than milk, it is also lower in sugar and fatty crap. So try having a few squares of really dark chocolate to see if that gets rid of your sweet cravings.

I like getting a melon and slicing it into bitte size peices so I can eat it easily through the day.

I also like slicing fruit and covering it with muller light yogurt.

With the above sometimes me and my friend share a hartley's low fat jelly with fruit and half a pot of muller light. It's very yummy but good for you as well.

Humous doesn't have to be high fat if you make it at home.
And it's low GI so it keeps you feeling full for ages.
Interesting fact: A typical Israeli eats 22 pounds of Humous a year!
