Texting someone in the UK when in another country

Julia., 27 August, 2008 at 14:16 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

My mum is going abroad tomorrow to Greece, and she's convinced she has to do something special, like put a 44 in front of the mobile number when texting me from Greece, but this is just for dialling a number in the UK isn't it? . I'm pretty certain that you don't need to do anything when the phone is abroad, that you just send the message as usual, but I want to put Mum's mind at rest and find out for certain. She has a PAYG from Vodafone I think.

If anyone could tell me for definite one way or the other, I would appreciate it!

I thought you had to add +44 and take the 0 off for texts as well as phoning. Otherwise how would the greek network know where to send it.

If the number is saved as 07... it needs to be changed to +447... so that is has the country code in it. I'm always texting when I'm at my mums in spain so I save all my numbers this way as it still works over here. In fact, I think its the default format most phones save it as but its worth checking them.

If she is texting/calling from a UK phone to a UK phone she doesn't need to do anything. I have a Tanzanian SIM card and need to add the +44 as i took out the british SIM

When you roam the foreign network recognises your nationality.

You don't need to make any alterations. For that matter you don't need to change dialled numbers either.

I always thought you had to put +44 even for a text, and then I forgot one day and H replied so I figured that you don't have to. This was USA - UK but I can't imagine it's any different to any other country. If she's really worried she could do +44, the message will still go

Provided you've set it up for roaming, the phone should do everything automatically - but be careful when texting from abroad as there can be hefty hidden surcharges. For starters, I don't think "foreign" texts count as part of your free allocation.

If there's a roaming service on her phone (she can always check this) then she won't need to put 44 in front. I've never had to put 44 in front of any text messages from anywhere in Europe or the States.
