That Ringo Starr advert really annoys me

Hugo Brambles, 24 April, 2009 at 18:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I don't get it? Its for Aviva insurance which shows celebs saying stuff......Maccualy Culkin says "Remember Me", Elle Mcpherson says "don't treat me like an idiot" and then Ringo Starr says "don't call me by my stage name"?

How many people would know what his real name is and even if I am in the minority in not knowing, why would it annoy him people calling him Ringo Starr? I mean thats how he's become who is his?

Even that doesn't make any sense. Having normal names didn't do John, Paul and George any harm, after all. If anything, having a poncy stage name made him look even more of a nitwit, if that were possible.

I don't mind when the others are talking about their names but when Ringo Starr does it both H and I say yes no matter what his name was he would have made it on the talent of the other three.

Apparently it is saying "we won't treat you just like a number, you are important to us".

Well, that's what H says and he works for NU (oops, sorry, Aviva) not that I understand how that comes from the advert.

The thing that annoys me about that advert is that NU are paying all those "celebs" shedloads of cash to be in their advert to tell everyone that they have changed their name to Aviva. Why??? Why did they have to change their name from something everyone associated with finance and insurance to something that sounds like a new shampoo or airline and has absolutely no relevance to insurance at all? Why are they wasting money changing their name with all the associated costs from advertising to changing their stationery and website,. staff uniforms etc etc and for what purpose? What was wrong with the old name, that people knew and, presumably, trusted? Just a total waste of money as far as I can see, which will no doubt be passed on to their customers in increased premiums etc.?

I was ranting because of the difference in the two adverts he has done - my H said it makes about as much sense as Pants-Man!

The advert is about people who have changed their names and gone on to bigger and better things - which is what NU is saying it will do with its new name.

but if that's the case why is ringo being precious about people using his 'new' name? that doesn't make sense!

(not that i've seen the advert, have i missed anything?)

No idea, haven't seen it - I just read an article in a Sunday supplement about the adverts, the first of which was the most expensive ever made apparently.

Yes, the first advert made sense as a change of name leading to excellent results. The second advert Ringo looks at the camers/viewer and says, 'Don't call me by my stage name'. Totally contradictory.
