The Mushy Pea Fritter thread

Peter, 6 July, 2008 at 22:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

Not my bag although Mrs P likes mushy peas. Recently whilst away, she came across a fish and chip shop that does mushy pea fritters....something we Herts people don't get. Is this readily available in your area of the UK? Please post locations if this is so....or was this just a regional thing....

I had one and I agree it was rotten, this coming from someone who loves both batter and mushy peas. It was in Harry Ramsdens (in Glasgow) though, I have never seen them in any other chippy.

Never heard of that before, as a combination sounds horrible. Also logistically - how do they do this?

They do them in Moston, manchester near my Mums.

I prefer a mushy pea barm with vinegar or a mushy pie & (inside of) meat potato barm with brown & tomato sauce. MMM

To those of us that only have fish shops in our area that only do cod and look perplexed when you mention haddock, skate or anything else, can you describe what a pea barm is please.....

Actually its my nearest fish and chip shop, aka Ding Wah Fish Bar, a fish and chip shop that also does chinese food. They "Onry do cod"...I always ask for haddock and chips and get the usual "onry cod" back to which I reply, "ah well then, if thats all you do, just the chips please" 10 years on I still get pleasure from that.....

Not quite sure how a supposed Fish and Chip shop can "onry" do cod......

Ah...I have drunk many pints there (not driving) in my younger times....The Winston Churchill, a couple of pubs in the town itself and the 13 string jack....

I can't answer for the local chippies in Essex tho.....

Slightly off topic, the company that I do a shedload of corporate work took me to a posh retaurant(the Belvedere) in Holland Park...they were too posh for mushy peas there...they had "crushed peas"...??

The chippy near a mate's house also does chinese food, and when you go in for chips they ask you if you want "sawn finger?"

As this is accompanied with gesticulations involving a salt shaker and a vinegar bottle, I always say yes. H declines the finger, and only likes "saw". ?
