Things to do in these dark winter evenings?

Flump, 18 November, 2008 at 14:48 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 34

Mr Grumpy works from home and gets a bit house-sick by the time I get home from work. He wants to 'do something' tonight after dinner that involves getting out of the house, but I don't want to go to the pub, the cinema, or (god help me) bowling (this is as imaginative as I get ?). Can anyone think of anything else we could do? He likes the idea of a drive in the countryside, but frankly it's not going to be terribly thrilling in the pitch dark is it... Ooh I think the council tip is open til 9? ?

Any sensible suggestions purlease? ?

Do you have any interests in common? If it's something more social you both want to be doing then maybe a new hobby, that holds meetings etc. My best friend has a social life that revolves around rowing for example?

That said, A night time country drive.. I'm sure you'll both find SOME WAY of passing the time if the views aren't up to much ?

You should count yoruself lucky.. My ex used to suggest things liek going to the GYM together .. euh!

    xx

Luckily I'm banned from the gym for cancelling my membership without giving 6 months notice ?

Oh god, please don't let it be the Thames Valley Jaguar Enthusiasts Club meet night tonight or I will get dragged to that and have to make polite conversation with men with big taches all night ? I'm not really a hobbies kinda girl. Argh, winter is crap!

This might be a stupid suggestion but how about finding a pub/coffee shop that has board games and going and playing chess/backgammon? Or even finding a cheesy video games arcade? Do those still exist?

Ooh go you Mildred! Swit swoo! Aah glad to be of assistance ?

I'd be up for a class of some kind, but I don't think Mr G would - his work is very brain-intensive and he's usually all zombie-fied by the time I get back, so he needs something that doesn't involve thought or learning. He looooves board games, that's a good idea Sophie - except the house is full of them as he collects them (argh!) so it would be a bit daft to go out to do that. Comedy club is a good idea, I'll look into that thanks Mildred. Oh feck it, shall we just go to the ruddy pub ?

    Shup Nick, I knooooooooooooow ?

Ooh I loooove puz quizzes too! No, I live in Reading but go to Brighton a lot to see friends and to basically shop til I drop, I can't get enough of it. I can happily spend 7 hours at a time pootling around the shops Smiley laugh

I am vvvv thick by the way, so the Flump & Sparkley team won't win ?

Pub quiz is a fab idea. Or a pub that has pool or darts?

Oooooh, or ice-skating? Or find a nice winter Christmas fair with rides and gingerbread and mulled wine and stuff. The Hyde park one is starting soon, and could be worth a trek to Londres.

I am sooo doing a Christmas market when they start, but I have a feeling I may struggle to drag Mr G along with me ?

Ice skating gives me hurty ankles ?

Do you have an Xscape or similar near you? We've done some snowboarding lessons and now go lots to brush up for a snowboarding trip to Canada in the New Year. It's open til 11pm-ish.

We go out to a delic/cafe/coffee place near us a lot and read magazines and talk rubbish to each other. I know you could eat/drink/talk at home but it's nice to be in a buzzy atmosphere and not our house - and there's no dirty dishes to clean.

I can also highly recommend redecorating your entire house for something to keep you busy. Don't think it'll help with the boredom though...
