This Charming Man by Marian Keyes.... Anyone read it?

22 August, 2008 at 14:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

I finished it yesterday... And am missing it already. I can't wait till she write her next book (probably al least 1 year...)

Has anyone else read it? What did you think?

I like her books - I think she's a very skilled and intelligent writer. I finished that the day after it came out ?

I haven't read it but I like Marian Keyes' books. Will have to go and buy it now! Is it in the series with Watermelon, Rachel's Holiday etc? Or is it a standalone type? I'm sure there was still one of the sisters who hadn't had her story told yet.

So it is good? I hated her last one, the other side of the story, but enjoyed all her others.

Is Anybody Out There is a bad bad book, it makes you cry and look for hugs from your other half in a very embarrassing, twee and snotty way ?

Anybody Out There? is one with a 'sister' in it? If so I've read that, it is fab. My favourite is Last Chance Saloon.

Is Anybody Out There was my favorite although I agree with HH, it was terrible for crying and hug needing.

I loved This Charming Man because it was very different to her usual style.

I can't wait for Helen's story. It feels like we've had to wait ages for it though and there's no talk about it coming any time soon. ☹️

I've only read Sushi for Beginners and Anybody Out There. I didn't realise AOT was part of a series though until afterwards so I have some catching up to do. The spy sister's story is out next year or something isn't it?

DOn't read it on a plane on the way back from a job interview, with no other half in sight. The other passenges look at you oddly and change seats...

DOn't think I've read This Charming Man but I read AOT on holiday last year. My god ? I was very glad we were in our tent/hotel room most of the time I read it, and it wasn't one of my commuting choices!

I have inside information about Marian - I went to Dublin on Sunday to hear her do a reading and a Q&A at the Sugarclub (am still ridiculously giddy about getting my photo taken with her and I made a complete sychophantic fool of myself but she is absolutely LOVELY).

Anyhoo...she read out the first chapter from the next book which she is writing at the moment - it's going to be called something like The Brightest Star in the Sky. It sounded great but very different to her other books. She didn't say when it was due out but that it's still a work in progress.

THEN - she told us (the audience, not just me ?) that she's planning for the book after that one to be Helen Walshes' story, probably told as a double act with Mammy Walsh, but that she's nervous about writing it as it will need to be more plot driven than her other books - like a mini detective story is what she said.

    Eeeee! I love her.

Ohhh, fantastic gossip Hello Sunshine!! I can't believe Helen's story isn't going to be her next book. <sulk>

It will be sad though because it'll be the last one. Unless she does one for Kate (Claire's eldest daughter). Might be taking it one step too bar.
