Those who study from home...

NickyNooNaa, 23 September, 2008 at 17:02 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

How on earth do you keep motivated and actually do the work? Did you make a timetable or set yourself time aside?

I'm struggling! I was planning on ditching my course and put it down to bad experience as I just kept putting it off and then i became pregnant and used the tiredness as an excuse. But I spoke to a tutor who said that my assessments were actually fine and i'm over half way through so I feel i should see it through. I am currently on ML and have a 2 year old (who goes nursery 3 mornings a week) and an 8 week old.

Surely I need to just pull my socks up?!!

Its a flipping nightmare, and quite often, motivation is hard to come by.

At the start of each day I draw up a list of what needs done (not just for uni, but housework, phonecalls that need made, whatever) and everytime I have ticked two or three things off the list, give myself some time to faff around online, make a cup of tea, whatever.

I also arrange to meet up with people/make appointments for set times, so that I know I have to have stuff done by that time. Works quite well.

When motivation has vanished, I head to the library, turn off the wi-fi and have a massive cramming session.

Gosh. It's hard enough to study at home, but while pregnant, and then with a small child? I'm not surprised you find it hard!

Keeping yourself motivated is the biggest hurdle with homestudy, it's what makes it so much harder than going to classes. For me it was a previous academic failure that kept me going with my last course. I just couldn't quit again. The fear of quitting kept me going.

I do set aside time - i have a year wall planner, mark on it all my assignment deadlines, and mark out evenings/weekends when i will study, turning down all the fun distractions (like TV, going out, doing the ironing, cleaning the loo...). I also find it helps to have a place to work too, a dedicated work space, where I can surround myself with books and notes, pin things up on the wall etc. And support from Mr FtG is essential. I need to know that he understands what I am trying to do, that distraction isn't welcome, that cups of tea are. Your tutor's support is also invaluable, and you seem to have that, which is great news.

I guess it is a case of pulling up socks, digging in and just getting on with it. think of what you will get at the end, and the fantastic sense of achievement you will feel when it's all over. And it will look fab on your CV!

What are you studying btw? And who with?

I'm studying Computerised Bookkeping with Home Learning College. My tutor is rubbish and not helpful at all, but I've spoken to another tutor twice and she was very helpful and encouraging. I'm a legal PA and have always liked the invoicing/numbers aspect of it but since moving with my bosses to a new firm the accounts people deal with all the number crunching and we don't touch it.

I also find other jobs more appealing than studying sometimes like the ironing etc!

Studying from home has become increasingly popular, especially with the rise of digital education tools and platforms. For students who opt to study from home, there are both benefits and challenges. Let’s break them down:

    Benefits of Studying from Home:
    1. Flexibility:

      • Customizable Schedule: Students can set their own study hours, making it easier to balance academic work with personal interests, hobbies, or even part-time jobs.
      • Comfort: Studying in a familiar environment, like your own room or a favorite spot in the house, can make learning feel less stressful and more enjoyable.
    2. Personalized Learning:

      • Students can take their time with topics they find challenging, moving at their own pace without the pressure of keeping up with a classroom full of peers.
      • Access to Online Resources: Platforms like Homeworkify provide students with additional resources and tools to help them grasp difficult concepts, enabling a more personalized learning experience.
    3. Cost-Effective:

      • Studying from home eliminates commuting costs and the need for physical school supplies. Online learning also reduces expenses related to tuition fees for in-person classes in some cases.
    4. Increased Focus:

      • Many students find they are less distracted at home than in a noisy classroom environment, allowing for deeper concentration during study sessions.
    Challenges of Studying from Home:
    1. Lack of Discipline:

      • Without the structured environment of a classroom, students might struggle with maintaining focus or adhering to a strict study schedule.
      • It’s easy to get sidetracked by distractions at home, such as TV, social media, or other activities.
    2. Isolation:

      • Studying at home can be lonely, especially for students who thrive in social learning environments. Without face-to-face interaction with classmates and teachers, students may feel disconnected.
      • The lack of group study sessions or collaborative work can make it harder to engage deeply with the material.
    3. Limited Access to Immediate Help:

      • In a traditional classroom, students can ask questions in real-time, but this may not always be the case when studying online from home.
      • However, platforms like Homeworkify can help bridge this gap by offering immediate access to educational resources and support, which mimics the kind of on-demand help found in a classroom.
    4. Technical Issues:

      • Studying from home requires reliable internet access and a computer, which might be challenging for some students. Technical difficulties can disrupt learning and cause frustration.
How to Make Studying from Home Effective:
    • Create a Study Schedule: Establishing a regular study routine helps maintain discipline and ensures that study sessions are productive.
    • Set Up a Dedicated Study Space: Having a specific area for studying helps minimize distractions and keeps the mind focused.
    • Use Online Learning Platforms: Platforms like Homeworkify help students manage their workload, find solutions to tough homework problems, and even access additional study materials. These tools provide guidance in a way that mimics the support of a classroom teacher.
    • Stay Connected: Students should stay connected with peers and educators through online forums, group chats, and video calls to ensure they don’t feel isolated.
    • Take Breaks: Incorporating regular breaks can help maintain concentration and prevent burnout. A good study-to-break ratio can keep you productive and focused.

In many ways, studying from home requires the same level of dedication and organization as studying in a traditional school setting, but with the added advantage of flexibility. Using tools like Homeworkify can enhance this experience, helping students remain on track while studying independently.

I've a similar situation with my daughter, she is in the 3rd grade, and I was looking for help with math. The Internet offers many options, a good option in my opinion for math help for 3rd graders https://brighterly.com/3rd-grade-math/ but I have never used online tutoring services.

I am worried because my child is still small and I want the lessons to be exciting and interesting for her. I need something exciting that will keep her interested and at the same time lay a solid foundation.

Who uses online tutoring platforms, what can you say?
