I personally think it is appropriate if one or other of the people getting married is in the forces, but other than that, it isn't really a wedding hymn - it's more of a nationalistic hymn. Nothing to do with if it's depressing sounding.

Even as a non-religious person, I quite like Jerusalem, because you can really sing it with gusto. According to weddingguideuk: "This hymn is about celebration and praise, making it suitable as the first hymn sung at the beginning of the service, which is in praise of God in whose presence everyone has assembled."

I read it as being about commitment to a cause, and marriages are also about commitment and working hard to fulfil your dreams together.

All things aside, over the years at weddings, this is the one hymn that people really join in with singing loudly, more than any other IMPE.

It's one of my favourites and has only recently been allowed across the board at weddings.

We're having for the meaning behind it and for the cricket connotations!

We had Jerusalem and the Lord is My Shepherd and people loved them, esp. the vicar!

Jerusalem was the most popular wedding hymn at our church last year. we sang it at HALF the weddings. (So if you want something a bit original, don't go there!!)
