Time Filler ideas needed!

kezzburton, 6 September, 2010 at 12:41 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hi girls,

I need some advice. My ceremony is at 11am and my afternoon sit down will be at approx 1:30-2pm at a separate venue. We will be having photos taken then travel time to the reception venue, more photos and welcome drinks before we eat so that's fine. But following the afternoon reception there will be a gap of approx 2-3 hours before the evening reception starts.

How do I fill this time? My TOG will be with me all the way up to first dance so we could take more piccies but this won't include everyone and I'm afraid people who have been to the ceremony then afternoon won't want to stay for the evening because they are bored. The reception venue is a hotel with different bars / places to sit and there is a lovely garden (which we have full use of if the weather holds out on us) so some people will need to check in / freshen up (including myself).

We've got an idea to have casino tables to fill this gap but the local firms are around £400 and our budget is already fairly tight.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to kill time?

Thanks for any suggestions

Giant games on the grass? I.e. Jenga, chess, snakes and ladders etc - you can hire them for quite cheap.

Hire an ice cream cart? Saw a thread on here the other day and they were reasonably priced and would go down a storm.

How about a DIY photo booth? Keep guests occupied and makes sure everyone has already written in your guest book before the evening guests arrive.

Get a caracaturist (sp?) to go round and draw everyone - they cost about £300 (ish). Or a Magician?

    Another drinks reception?

Sorry cant think of anything else!

Personally I think the adults will just be enjoying themselves chatting to people, especially those that they haven't seen for some time and just enjoying a few drinks. Its only 2-3 hours you'd be in a pub longer than that.

A few basic things things like some canapes being brought round might break it up a bit. Or have a band on.

kids are a bit different, and I'd suggest a magician, general childrens entertainer or a bouncy castle.

We had a bouncy castle which went down well with kids and adults (it was 20' x 20')

But, I would be surprised if there wasn't a delay somewhere meaning that your 2 hour gap isn't less. What type of ceremony is it and how long is travel time between the venues? It might be that your meal won't start until later. Or you could have a receiving line in or out of the meal to greet people individually?

Just make sure the bar is open - that tends to keep most people occupied!

I have already thought about the bouncy castle idea thanks to Raef! But i have to say that i think you should focus more on the kids cos then if they are occupied and not stressing the parents out the adults will be happy with some canapes and alcohol. Keep the kids happy and therefore keep the adults happy.

Lukily the reception room has a large kids play area attached to it so the kids will be easy to entertain and there is a private bar in the room. Also our photographer is going to take as many piccies as we like so she can take pictures of people if they like as they will be dressed up.

I guess I'm thinking about this a bit too much then. (Mum's fault)

What about just having drinks and mingling. And having the TOG go round taking pics of the mingling! Smiley smile That would be lovely in your album! And you could do any wee family shots you didnt get!

I second the giant games idea,as we have been thinking about having them too. Or a photobooth? What about a quiz that people can do as a table and have a prize for the winners? x

I bought lots of garden games & made up a quiz but the rain stopped us using the games. Too be honest though we didn't end up with any time after the meal. Wish we'd had longer in fact!
