Time for evening guests

Ajx, 16 June, 2022 at 15:50 Posted on Planning 0 6

We are having a catholic church ceremony at 2pm, and we are then going to a hotel afterwards for our reception. We arent having a sit down meal inbetween the ceremony and the reception, we're just going to have a buffet instead.

My question is, what time would we ask the evening guests to arrive? I was thinking around 4pm, because I thought we'd have the buffet around 6pm and that we fed everyone (ceremony and evening guests) but is this how it works? Do we invite extra people from say 7pm and class them as evening guests? Or do we just not bother with having extra evening guests because there's only going to be around 15 extra and just invite them to the ceremony as well?

What would you do?!

If you are only having one round of food at 6 ish to would say just invite me the extra guests to the whole thing. This way you are not asking your day guests to wait so long for food as realistically if you have evening guests arrive at 7 you would then normally do cake cutting and first dance and food around 8.30. That said, if the do buffet at 6 and no other food them it may make your evening long and people may get hungry. May be worth seeing if your venue could drop nsome sandwiches later or atleast some crisps, crudités and dips around 9 ish to keep people going

Sorry I didn’t add in that we are having a second round of food later on! I was just thinking with only inviting a few extra people to the evening part is it really worth it or just have them at the ceremony as well. I haven’t spoken to my FH about the timings yet but I’m my head it goes speeches around half 5, food around 6, cake cutting around 7 and then first dance half 7. Not sure if that’s a traditional timeline or not x

Ah ok I see! So normally you would have ceremony and then an hour or so gap for photos and mingling, so assuming you get to be ue at 4 you would probably be best to have first food at 5.15 to 5.30, eat and the do speeches after at say 6.15 to 6.30 and be done by 7 ready for evening. You could the add the additional people to arrive at 7.15 and cake cutting and first dance at 7.45 to give you time to behave a breather and fresen up between food and guest arrival. Then evening food at about 9, so gives enough time for people to get hungry again. For the evening food only cater for around 70% of your numbers as if people only ate a few hours before you won't need as much and helps keep cost down. Even if you add the 15 the whole day I would still do the food first earlier than 6. All that being said you may want to check with your venue as if you only have one room they may need to have the to turn it around so they will be best place to guide you on timings.
