Tipi wedding

Kirsty, 23 February, 2023 at 15:51 Posted on Planning 0 13
Has anyone had a or planning a Tipi wedding reception? We are having our Tipi wedding reception at our local village hall. We are having our ceremony at our church and then the reception on the field at the back of the hall. The field turned out no to be owned by the hall so we’ve had to get permission from the land owners which hasn’t been easy to say the least! They’ve contacted us today and said that their solicitors advise them to ask for a £750 plus vat for the licence to occupy for 3 days. It’s just a bit of a nightmare as we hadn’t known this, they always said they didn’t want money from us. I’m so excited to have the Tipi’s but I’m so worried it’s just a lot of stress and we haven’t got an organiser or manager for the day. I’m worried it will all be so chaotic! A small part of me is regretting not booking a wedding venue and have the staff do a lot for us. My fiancé would be really sad to hear me say that but it’s just turning out to be a lot of work! Anyone any similar experiences?

Hello! We are having a tipi wedding! A DIY.

What do you need me to answer?
I say £750 is good. Before we found our venue we were quoted £1500 for a field.
We are having a wedding planner for the day. We haven’t booked them yet but it was coming out to be something like £500 and that was including meeting her this year and twice next year before the big day. I know it’s an extra cost but we are being savvy everywhere else so we are happy to spend it on one.

Hi! When is your wedding? The tipis are great aren’t they, we couldn’t resist!
That is true, it is technically our venue and the hall have only charged us a small amount too. Think it was just the short notice.
That’s a good price for a wedding planner. I had assumed it would cost more.

Hi, it’s July 2024. Some are more, I think we were quoted near £1000 for one. Will be my fault if the one we want is gone as this quote was back in September! 😳 My friend has offered to do it for free as she’s just quit her job as a wedding planner but I would rather her enjoy the day. They are beautiful with an elegant but relaxed vibe. Type in wedding planners in your area and some quotes will come up, like breakdowns. Think our one was £45 for an hour or 2 video call but would be happy to meet in person and then whatever it was for the day.

Haha yes Melissa that’s very important! Long story short but we have made the decision not to have the tipi wedding. We have had so much stress and complications with the people that own the land that it’s just not worth it with only 4 months left of the planning. We are doing our plan B option which is to have our reception in the village hall and decorate it in the same way we would of done the tipis.

I am hoping to have a marquee on our field for the reception.

Are you going to have an inside marquee in the village hall?

I would of liked to have done this but we’ve only got 4 months left now and have already had a financially loss as we will need to pay the tipi company in full. I doubt we can afford to have an indoor marquee fitted to the village hall too. We do plan to have two large flower hoops hanging from the ceiling/wooden beams, festoon lighting and bunting etc. hope it will look how we picture it. Have you had to pay fees for the land for your marquee?

No as we own the land ourselves. We are currently looking at marquee companies and caters to book. A family member has suggested the village hall with an indoor marquee may be a better option in case of bad weather (our wedding is in June 2024) but I just love the idea of having a marquee on our own land.

That’s great that you have your own land. What would you do for power and toilets? We were going to use the hall for this. Have you thought of the tipis? We went to a showcase and they are great so much room and character to them plus maybe a little more weather proof than a marquee. What would you do? Hire a supplier to do the indoor marquee?

We have mains water on site and we would need to use generators for power. We would hire some fancy portaloos, there are several companies that do this for weddings and parties etc, although at first glance they seem to be quite pricey! Will definitely look into the Tipis.
If we do go down the village hall option I would look into hiring an indoor marquee from a supplier who would put it up and take it down etc.

A marquee will have no lesser weather protection than a tipi. I have shot many weddings where a marquee has been put up on their own land, straw bales to sit on outside - fire pits at night, a fish and chip van for the evening, booze from tecso, maybe pro caterers for the main meal. Photos in the field next door.

The loos are usually called "posh loos" and look like small porta cabins. Usually in these cases the close family just use Mum and Dads loos in the house.

You will have freedom to do everything as you want but its a lot of work and not necessarily cheaper than a wedding venue.

Here's a little tip for a Summer wedding in a marquee see the first picture on the right hand side it has blackout material in the ceiling and sides -thats the dance floor. Because a summer wedding its still light at 9.30 and a marquee lets in the light and a darker dance floor area with the dj lights looks better.
