To steam or not to steam?

Kelly, 2 January, 2025 at 20:28 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 4
Hi everyone.
Wedding is in April and I'm just starting to book in trials and fittings. I am also begining to overthink the fine details!
I have my wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses. They will have all been stored in garment bags for a good few months by the wedding. Basically, should I invest in a steamer? I have seen a service that comes to the venue or I could invest in a decent steamer and save a little bit of money. With lots of satin and chiffon, I am concerned about the risk of water marks.Any advice, recommendations or tips greatly appreciated.

Does the place you got them from offer steaming? Although if they've been carefully stored, they might not need any treatment at all. I'm a great one for DIY but in this case, the amount of other things to do pre wedding plus the risk of getting it wrong and damaging the dress would make me favour getting professional help!

Thank you for your response. My wedding dress will be steamed by the shop after alterations but they do not store dresses. Due to my job booking me out on a residential trip the week before the wedding, it is likely to have to be stored in its bag for at least a week before the big day. I don't have any other options for storage. All other items came from Wed2be so no option to steam.

If it's been professionally steamed a week before your wedding, then it really shouldn't need doing again. For the bridesmaids' dresses, can you take a look at them nearer the time and decide then?

It sounds like you're getting everything well organized for your big day! If you're concerned about the risk of water marks on satin and chiffon, it might be a good idea to invest in a high-quality steamer, as it offers more control compared to traditional irons. Just ensure that the steamer has a low heat setting and is used from a distance to prevent water marks. If you're unsure, you could also try the venue service to be safe.
