To videographer or not?

Cheryl, 8 June, 2022 at 19:04 Posted on Planning 0 10
Hi everyone. I'm wondering if any of you have had discussions about a videographer at your weddings? I am guessing that a photographer doesn't do videos alongside the photos? Would this be a 2 person role?
Also wondering everyones thoughts on a videographer. I know it is down to personal preference and budget but wondering if anyone has recommendations aswell.
Thanks! Cheryl

No we didn’t bother as we don’t know anyone who says they watch their wedding video years later!
We aren’t even having a wedding album done as we want to make our own. But we have paid for a decent photographer who will do all day from bridal prep to after the first dance then we can choose how we display our pictures afterwards. Extra cost as well so wasn’t necessary for us.

We didn't feel the cost was justified and was out of budget, we did spend on a decent photographer, but In hindsight I probably would have had one now, just because the day went so fast and the photos are lovely I wish we had a video of everyone as it would be more evoking for memories. Each to their own but if you can stretch to it I would say do it. You normally source separately but is always worth asking your photographer for any recommendations as they will no doubt have worked with some at other weddings

We’ve managed to find a photographer that does both- He does full length and short films. We’ve opted for the short length as they look incredible (a mix of normal footage and old fashioned) plus it was kinder on the budget. They last about the length of a song with no sound (so you won’t have a recording of vows/speeches) but we weren’t too bothered- we can always ask someone to record it on their phone if we want it. We just felt like we would likely re-watch it more over the years than a full length video, but it’s all personal choice

Loads of my friends got married when videos were regarded as a 'must have', so they all got one, and I don't think anyone has watched theirs more than once - when they first got it to check it worked ok! So I don't think it's worthwhile.

The only exception would be if you have a lot of friends & family who aren't able to come who would benefit from seeing it. Although if you're getting married in a church, it would be worth seeing if the church has the facility to livestream or record, since many of them set that up during lockdown. That's what we did for our wedding in 2020 - the quality wasn't as good as a pro video, but it enabled our loved ones overseas to watch us get married, which was all they were bothered about.

We have found a lovely that do both. I think having it videoed is a lovely idea, the day goes by so quickly and it Will be amazing to watch it back. Ours will capture everything, vows, readings and speeches. It's also some to how your children in years to come. I would definitely look into It X

We were originally going to have a videographer but have decided against it now, mainly due to the cost but also because, realistically, I don’t think we would watch it much! I don’t think I’ve been to any weddings where there was a videographer…

I had a videographer and photographer and am so glad that I did. My husband wasn't convinced by the need to have a videographer initially but is now pleased that we went ahead with having one.

The day goes by in such a blur and it felt like we were being swept away from one part of the day to another. It will be so good to watch it back. We also have friends overseas who would want to see it.
The most important part of it for me is that my dad's hilarious speech was recorded. Having almost lost him in the past few years due to illness I didn't think that he would be at my wedding. Now I'm really glad that I've got it on video as I can watch it back in the future (again, I don't think you fully take everything in on the day) and hear his voice which a photograph can't capture. I have really enjoyed watching my own parents' wedding video as half of their congregation had passed away over the years - seeing my grandparents moving and smiling was really special. Sorry I know that sounds a bit morbid but I thought I'd share anyway!

If you’d like some video but not the expense of a seperate videographer you could look at photographers who do both.

Ours brings a second shooter and makes a 10min summary video for an extra £500 or so. I think it will be lovely to have as we can all be very judgemental about photos of ourselves and will be a nice memory. Some also do audio/full speech recording too if that’s what you’d like.

We’re not bothering, we couldn’t stand the thought of having to be “on” all day for the camera and the cost was just insane! Not something that we personally wanted to include in our budget

We're thinking of using an app called Vidicrew where guests can upload their pics and videos of the day and professionals will use them to make something from that. I don't know anyone that's used it but it's a fraction of the price of a vifeogtaphet and feels like a nice compromise.
