Toast Drinks

Emma, 27 January, 2022 at 17:45 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 13
Hi guys!

What’s the general consensus on toast drinks?
Has anyone skipped them and asked people to use the wine on the table? Or is that a wedding crime?

Is honestly up to you, if budget doesn't permit then fair enough, but if you can then I would as people may have finished wine as expecting fizz to come, but if you just tell them there is no fizz coming it will be fine. You do what you want to do. We luckily have it in our package and was reasonable price as a bottle does a fair few people as it is only a small amount so may be worth coating it up as may be cheaper than you think

We’ve been quoted £700 for just toast drinks and I just think it’s such a waste of money when people can use the table wine. Why does it matter which glass you’re holding in the air? But my fiancé is worried people will judge us. I’d rather be judged than waste £700 I think. It’s all a bit of a minefield.

Wow! That is a lot, how many people? I am the same as you, judge me as much as you like, I have just fed you so whatever! 😂 On all seriousness I would ask the venue if there is a cheaper option, like the cheapest the do, doesn't have to taste amazing right?! Or are you able to provide and just pay corkage, as you could just get supermarket bottles at 6-8 quid each

So £5 per person, which I guess is about what you pay for a glass of prosecco in a bar. Honestly is up to you, I would ask if they can do anything and if not then go with what you want

We have skipped toast drinks but have done a welcome drink - Prosecco. A bar will be open when guests arrive as well for them to get own drinks as it’s not a formal sit down do. The corkage is £3 per bottle but we have got the large Prosecco bottles (magnum) more glasses same corkage as 1 bottle!

I would skip it. Although I'm probably biased as I can't drink alcohol for medical reasons, so usually end up toasting the bride & groom in water anyway! It's the gesture and the thought behind it that counts though, not what kind of liquid is in the glass.

Here is a little work around for you. The toasts are normally with the speeches which traditionally come at the end of the wedding breakfast. Have your speeches first and people will "toast" with whatever they have without expecting the usual fiz to go around at the end of the meal.

Many people have the speeches first, main reason I find is to get them out of the way if the speakers are nervous - that way they can enjoy their food.

We’ve been to a few weddings in different parts of Europe, where they do speeches between courses, which we loved, as it saves it being one big speech fest at the end. We’re thinking of doing that and then people would just toast with whatever drink they had at the time.

Only think I’d say is to check with your venue/caterer, as they’ll need to know to put a gap between each course, and roughly how long that gap will need to be!

Hey! Toast traditions can definitely vary depending on the crowd, but it’s always fun to mix things up a bit. Speaking of mixing things, I was reading about how the Wisconsin prison system operates, and it’s fascinating to see the different programs and resources available. For anyone curious. It really helps to understand the rules and guidelines in practice.
