Toilet seats - wooden or plastic?

Ostrich, 4 February, 2009 at 16:40 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 33

Or something else? I'm not really talking about those ones with the fish swimming around inside them, etc. ?

My colleague reckons the wooden ones are grim and not hygienic.

What have you got?

I've got a grim fish in the plastic seat in my daughter's bathroom (not my choice, this is what happens if you send daughter and OH to B&Q), wooden in the upstairs en suite, plastic in my ensuite and a plastic in the main bathroom. I would imagine that wooden ones are treated as not to harbour nasties and would be just as hygeinic as any other one.

We have plastic on all ours but wood tends to be warmer I think.

Plastic, but they must be proper thick solid plastic, not those minging thin ones. I don't like wooden loo seats much although I don't think they're really unhygienic at all.

We've got wooden. I would have replaced it years ago, but i thought we would be getting a complete bathroom/loo refurb - so far that's not happened and we've still got the nasty thing.

It's warmer to sit on then plastic but i reckon it's harboring germies. Also, it's too high (not the best seating position.. if ykwim...)

We've just replaced our white plastic one for a wooden one and it's far easier to keep clean. I would say though it's worth spending a bit of cash and getting a good quality one. I thought we had but it's really loose and H says he's tightened it as much as he can but it's the fittings that are the problem.

We have really tough wooden ones, as long as it's stong plastic and not that type that if you farted to hard it would split.

    ? at tahdah.

We have a sturdy plastic one at the moment but I want to replace it because it's had a few minor accidents recently (MrOs dropping hammers on it, etc). I think I'll just go for another plastic one .

    Waaaaaaaaaaah!

I was going to ask this same question ? I have a new loo - oooh get me!! Not only is it reeeeeeeeeeally low on the ground, it's got a horridly flimsy plastic seat.

I was going to ask Hitched if 'novelty' toilet seats (think fishes or glitter ?) were naff ?

We have some pretty sturdy wooden ones (they came with the house) which are okay as they're warmer on your bum in the depths of winter. Still gets cleaned and disinfected the same as a plastic one would so i'm not too busy worrying about germs.....though now you've all mentioned it......?

Funny - I changed all my toilet seats when I moved into my old house (had 3 toilets, so wasn't cheap!) I couldn't bear to sit on 'unknown' toilet seats.

When I moved into this house I didn't, as I knew the people I bought off ?

We've got a wooden one and like SK Returns says I should think they are treated so that they don't harbour germs....

I once went to dinner at one of my OH's work colleagues and they had a mirrored loo seat - that was really grim ?

Bah, I like the tacky plastic ones with the fish/glitter/bubbles in.

But then my taste is kinda similar to my friends little 7 yr old girl - so thats probably why!

I love tacky/fun/silly - luckily so does my other half - I think most men would have left instead of having to sit on a glittery seat for his manly poo.

We've got a wooden one which is painted white and don't find it any harder to keep clean/hygienic than the plastic one we had before. And as others have said it's a lot warmer in the middle of the night!

I love novelty seats for the tacky factor. My little sister has a yellow duck plastic one which part of me covets ?

    ?

I'm going to have to start answering the phone "the Bucket residence, the lady of the house speaking" and having candlelight suppers aren't I?!

We had a wooden one and it split before long which looked really grim so it was replaced with a white coated wooden one which is much nicer.
I do like some of those plastic designs, not the barbed wire though!

We have a wooden one but I hate it. I think they're really old fashioned and suburban. MrH insisted on it (he has really old fashioned suburban taste unfortunatly)

Definitely plastic. We had a wooden one once, and it had split, and believe me when I tell you, you cannot imagine the pain of getting a cheek stuck in between two very tight bits of wood, not realising until you stand up, and finding yourself attached....

I do love the tacky ones though, but ours is pretty dull in comparison, just blue chequers, as we had the house on the market. Now I am on a mission to find a snazzy new one!

White and plastic here- but they have to be the good quality, strong type not the flimsy plastic ones that bend when you sit on them. We changed all our loo seats recently for soft close ones, which is great for the kids not getting fingers trapped in them. However it does mean Iwhen I use other peoples loos I forget they arent soft close and let go of the seat and it crashes down !

Ours is great. Very thick plastic, light blue with bubbles inside. It's so tacky it's wonderful. ?

Ours are neither. I don't know what they're made of, they're black and feel almost ceramic like. sort of old fashioned. (we didn't fit them)

    they're quite nice though.

I'm assuming the wooden ones are varnished or painted so I don't see how they would be unhygenic. Unless you smear poo on them or something.

We have a white wooden one which matches the rest of the bathroom fittings (bath side panel, towel rail, loo roll holder...). I had never thought of a wooden one being unhygenic - we keep it clean and disinfected!

a friend of ours made a lot of money selling 'designer' resin loo seats for around £140 each a few years ago... clearly lots of people had/have more money than sense ?

Oh, and white plastic for us on 2 loos, white painted mdf on the bathroom loo (I sit on the closed lid while my 3 y/o is having her bath and don't trust my hefty backside not to break a plastic one... it has happened in the past ?)

I actually prefer the mdf one but it's so heavy, i'm sure one day one of us will drop the lid and it'll break the bowl or something

I thought wood was naturally germ resistant? I'm sure I read somewhere about wooden chopping boards being more hygenic than the modern alternatives,

Yeah, the reason i think our pine (oak?) one is a bit unhygenic is the fact the laquer is starting to peel away underneath. And the 'lovely' brass hinges have gone all horrible from using bleach on them. Ick.

Now i think about it, it has to go! The previous owner had terrible taste in bathroom fittings, lots of brass effect taps and scallop shell sinks. ?
