Tojiro Senkou knives - better than Global??

Julesgirl, 1 May, 2008 at 14:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 24

I just received an email from John Lewis advertising their new kitchen range and in the email is an advert for these knives with the tagline "as used by Heston Blumenthal"

I'm planning on treating myself to a set of knives with our John Lewis vouchers [we have a JL credit card] but have always thought "Global are the ones to go for."

Can anyone enlighten me?

I would go and test them out.

I really, really wnated Global knives until I held one and it just wasn't as comfortable as the equivalent Wusthof. The Global on paper had more going for it, but wasn't for me.

Sorry to jump on your thread JG, but I need some recommendations as to what knives to buy. MrK loves cooking and wants some really good knives, so I thought I#%92d buy some for his birthday (I know, I know, we have a thrilling life ?) I have no real idea of budget but it's his 30th so I'm prepared to splash out. And yes, he really does want knives for his 30th ?

What are these ceramic knives you speak of Nick?

The Tojiro are nice enough but when I tried them I preferred the feel of the global.

I don't understand the hype with Global knives. They're horrible to hold IMO

Is it worth getting a knife block or will I not need enough knives to fill a knifeblock?

    I am pretty sure I won't need a breadknife

I didn't like the knobbly handles! And they just didn't sit right .. does that make sense?!

    I'm sticking with my ones .. a Heinz 47 variety and a sharpener! ?

knifeblock is really handy if you have a view, otherwise dont bother.

also wouldnt bother spending a lot of money on a breadknife. we just have a bog standard one, its absolutely fine.

Knifeblocks make your knives all blunt.

Get a magnetic rack instead. You can get ones you don't need to wall mount.

depends on the rack. mine is wooden, and the knives go in upside down, so no effect at all. i d never have a magnetic one, too dangerous.

    Fairy nuff.

I'm vain, and love the look of magnetic racks. No falling incidents yet, but then I keep my knife collection minimal.

After seeing someone pick up a knife displayed on a metal rack and hold it to someone's throat, I've never had knives on display. Although I do like the looks of them either on a rack or in a block. They're in a drawer out of sight - which, of course, wouldn't stop anyone wanting to open the drawer and grab one, but it makes me feel better!

Besides, I've more chance of being shot here than having a knife wielded at my throat - but hey!
