Torn cartlidge in knee, what exercises should i be avoiding and what can i do?

Hi

Iv just discovered that i have torn cartlidge in my knee (sob) which is going to need surgery. I have recently got back into the gym and was loving running. I have been told by the consultant that this is forbidden until i have the surgery which could be weeks away. I am eager to keep going to the gym but i dont know what i should be doing.

I have a appointment booked to go through a suitable programme, but the earliest they could do it is the 31st oct. If i dont go till then i will lose the will and end up not going back.

Any help and advice will be appreciated

Thanks

I think the only person who can really give you advice on this is your GP/Consultant

If you get it wrong you could do a lot of damage and end up in a lot of pain

    Thank you

    You are right

Trouble is my gp isnt that great and it isnt easy getting to talk to a consultant. At the last appointment he said i could keep exercising but i forgot to ask what i could do, i just remember him saying running was out. Im thinking its impact exercises that are out, so i could do the cross trainer, bike etc.

Guess i need to wait on my appointment at the gym, luckily its with a sports therapist so he should know i hope!

Since he's said you can keep exercising I'd probably just stick to swimming until you can talk to him again

I was advised by my consultant to avoid all exercise including swimming until I had my torn cartlidge operated on. After the op I had to have physio for a few weeks and do exercises at home and only when told to could I start back at the gym and I had a special programme which did not include any high impact excercise i.e. running and I could only do swimming if I crawled and not breast stroke (due to the leg action). Hope this helps. By the way the op was fine, I had key hole surgery and was only in over night and could walk quite well including up and downstairs with no probs more or less straightaway.

You can still go to the gm but just not do any excerises with that leg, work your upper body abs etc until you see the sports therapist on the 31st for some professional advice
