Tradtional round cake, what size tins?

melskully, 15 April, 2008 at 15:47 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hello all

My MIL is going to make my wedding cake, I want the traditional round 3 tier cakes. I have offered to buy the tins but I have no idea what size id need? I was wondering if anyone had any idea of the sizes and any idea where I could get a good deal on purchasing them?

hope everyone is well

There are a couple of cake HIBs who come on quite often, Debbie Bone is one, keep a look out for them I'm sure they'll be along soon. Sorry I can't help.

Not sure if this helps but I am having a 4 tier and having 12, 10, 8 and 6.

I guess it depends on how many people you want to feed though.

    Sorry can't help any more.

After talking to my cake making lady, she was saying that if we went for a 3 tiered cake it'd be 12,9,6.

We're going for 4 tiers which will be 12,10,8,6.

These are both round cakes btw.

As for the tins.....i'm sure i've seen them in some wedding nic-nac type shops, and craft shops both to buy and hire.

    Thanks guys,

I Live in Hampshire and the cake tins would be going to Cornwall. Ideally id needs the cakes a reasonable size to feed approx 70 people, also I would be saving one tier as a baptismal cake for our first future child as is tradition within my family.

So maybe I need four cakes then.. oooh gosh Help!!

    Hi there- cake HIB here.

I agree with what Jules.40 said if you have a standard 3 tier cake then 6,8 and 10 will be fine if you cut the top and the bottom and keep the middle for a future occasion. This is what I advise my customers to do - the top tier is often too small when it comes to a Christening.

However, it also depends on the design of cake you are having. I personally prefer the look of a 12, 9 and 6 inch cake if the tiers are stacked - it gives more of a difference between the tiers.

If this doesn't make sense let me know and I'll illustrate what I mean with pictures.
