Tropical Fish Keepers - Feeding whilst on holiday

rupertcat, 24 July, 2008 at 14:56 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

I'm a relatively new keeper of 11 tropical fish. We're going on holiday soon and I am wondering what the best way of keeping them fed over this period.

I don't really want to try and take them to someone else's house as it will doubtless end in tears, so am looking at the fish feeders.

Can anyone recommend anything - looking online there seems to be automatic feeders and then the slow release blocks? Is one better than the others?

I've got a fighter fish, 4 guppies, 3 tetras, a molly, and 2 orlies if that makes a difference!

Thanks in advance.

Lisa

I know my dad always used to use the blocks and never had any problems with it

How long are you off for? I've been told by my fish shop that my tropical fish (not all same as yours, but all soft acidic water types, whhich sounds like yours is) that they can go 7 days without a feed if necessary. Don't rely on that without talking to your local shop though - I don't want to kill your fish!! Otherwise, we've tried out the slow release blocks whilst we've been home - just to see - and they seem to work OK... Having excess food lying around can alter the nitrates (I think?!) so best to check them first, make sure they're spot on so you can take a bit of variance. But definitely talk to the shop where you get your fish - they'll know.

    Enjoy your hols!

    Thanks for the replies both.

We're off for 2 weeks, but will come home for 1 day after 7 days so can feed them then.

The molly is a really greedy monster so don't know if he would go 7 days without food.

I worry about the nitrates as the level went mental when we were getting the tank ready for the fish, but I think it was due to a plant dying. I've got 3 shrimps in there that seem to eat a lot of the rubbish and the Orlies graze the bottom, but the shop said not to leave food in the tank, but to fish it out if not eaten.

That's actually a really good idea to try out the blocks first while we're still at home.

    Cheers!
