Trying to find a hotel that is 'a little bit different'

Sparkley, 28 May, 2009 at 13:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

Afternoon Hitchers ?

It's MrG's birthday next week and I want to take him away for a romantic weekend. Well, I say weekend, we can only really stay 1 night , but spend all day Friday and Saturday in our chosen destination.

I'd like to go not much further than 80 miles from Surrey (where we live) as I don't want to spend the whole time driving. Would like to stay somewhere of interest, like Brighton, Oxford, erm......... anywhere else you can think of ? we went to Bath last year and had a wonderful time. I found a small boutique hotel on Last Minute which was a bargain at £100. Not fussed if it has a restaurant as MrG is veggie so we will probably eat out - he loves curry!

Has anyone got any lovely, nice hotels you can recommend? I know I seem a bit vague, I but we hate your usual run of the mill places. We have stayed here before and had the most amazing room https://urbanbeach.co.uk/

Budget, I would say £100 - £150.....

?

Probably a bit too far for you this time but we've stayed at www.glencothouse.co.uk and eaten at https://www.wookeyholeinn.com/ (which also has rooms) before. The house is stuffed full of weird and wonderful things and the rooms are full of books which you can take home with you if you don't finish reading them before you leave.

The pub is excellent - food is amazing and I bet their rooms are good too.

We love The Crazy Bear in Stadhampton near Oxford, all rooms are fab! Might be a bit over budget though..?

Also Hotel Du Vin chains are always wonderful and luxurious, the one in Henley On Thames is fantastic.

There is also a Hotel Du Vin in Winchester which is a good place to visit, and one in Brighton I think.

Check out the Mr&MrsSmith website for ideas of fab and funky hotels.

I have heard amazing reviews about this place, and I'd love to stay there. One ofr my friends spent her wedding night here and said it was fantastic. It's out of my price range sadly.

    What's your husband's best dish?

Have a look at www.i-escape.com - I haven't been on for a while, but they update their listings all the time and have some fab boutiquey hotels and luxurious B&Bs.

It's also great holiday-porn for wet afternoons.

I've stayed here and it's absolutely stunning. Reading isn't exactly your romantic hideaway, though ?

I can highly recommend https://zanzibarhotel.co.uk/ in Hastings if that isn't too far away.

I have stayed in the Antartica and Africa rooms and they are both amazing. It doesn't have a restaurant but there are plenty close by. There's only so much to do in Hastings but the rooms are so fab you don't want to leave them anyway.

We stayed here a few years ago:

    https://www.handpickedhotels.co.uk/

It was a laterooms.com deal, booked the night before we went at £99. Because the whole hotel was otherwise booked, we also managed to wangle one of the best suites too. It's in beautiful grounds perfect for romantic wanderings (they have stacks of wellies by the door, so you don't even have to take your own).

I third Mal in Oxford, it would be my choice but that may well be over budget as well.

We stayed here many years ago and it was lovely, the food in the pub attached is fabulous http://www.thewildduckinn.co.uk/rooms.html

I also love http://www.russellsofbroadway.co.uk/ and again, amazing food. Not good for MrG but I dream about the steak I had there! It's all local produce and owned by the ex manger of the Lygon arms.

    I'll keep thinking about others.

Hotel Felix in Cambridge is nice and should be within budget - the only drawback is that it's a little way out of town.

Woah! their hotel SOUNDS nice but the website is atrocious. Also, there are no photos on it, just horrible cartoon things. Weird.
