Understated dresses

Unlikley Bride, 17 October, 2012 at 17:04 Posted on Planning 0 25

What's with the word plain ey?! Whenever I try to explain that dresses are too much for the type of wedding we'll be having, the word plain just seems to trip off the tongue. No, just no.

Has anyone else had trouble finding a wedding dress that is understated i.e. doesn't have a huge train, lots of embellishment and underskirts.

I love lace and fishtail styles but can't get away with very tight ones. (thighs!)

I've seen quite a few understated dresses. Long and flowy but without a train or any puffiness but still very wedding dress like?

A boutique suggested to me (when I was asking for simple, elegant) choosing a bridesmaid evening gown in ivory and showed me one (in purple) that was beautiful and only around £250 (and that's more expensive because it's ivory)

How understated do you need? I think this is beautiful and not 'flouncy' Smiley smile

This is exactly the issue that I had so I had one made Smiley smile

There are no embellishments or fussy necklines with just a bit of gathering to one side.

    It's elegant and so simple.

Unfortunately it's not being made until next may so I had no photos Smiley sad

That's a very good idea about buying a bridesmaids dress in Ivory.

Have a look at the Dessy website as they have some stunning designs and they will probably be under £250.

I got a bit frustrated at first looking at dresses as I knew I did not want

    - strapless

    - a big skirt

    - loads of beads/diamonte/lace all over it

The first shop I went to was full of nothing but these dresses!! But I did manage to find quite a few I liked and I even tried on a few strapless ones and oens with big skirts, which was fun but confirmed to me that I didn't want that sort of dress. This was mine in the end and I loved it!

    I bought this dress:

from BHS ('Antoinette') for £206 in the sale, and then picked the stitching out of the belt to remove it! Talk about understated!

I do plan to add onto it, but it's a great dress on its own!

I am selling an understated dress. Its what I thought I wanted and then had massive wobbles an have since brought a big dress, oops. It's gorgeous though! I fell in love with it and first sight and had two sleepless nights over it. Google Maggie Sorreto Maren. V neck line and deep v back, buttons all the way down the back. Has a long train but easily altered. Just a little bit of spark detail and the bit I loved most, just one layer of net underneath!!!! They are out there but I found if difficult to find, just a shame that it wasn't for me all along x

I have lace and fishtail, and HUGE thighs!! Mines relatively simple, although I have added a belt to jazz it up a bit (not sure if i'm going to wear the belt the whole time, or maybe just ni the evening!)

I was also looking for a plain bling free dress and did struggle a bit. The dress I ended up with was the shop's own design so I can't post a photo, but was similar to Sincerity 3622 which I also tried on and really liked. Sorry but I can't work out how to post the photo, so have a link instead! https://www.justinalexander.com/sincerity-bridal/

    Hi,

Not sure where you live but my daughter had her dress made by Love Couture in Norwich, to a design she and the dressmaker came up with. It looked stuning and was exactly what she wanted. Maybe find pictures of ones you like and go from there.
