***UPDATE***OT - went for fake tan today - a question......

Gillsy, 20 March, 2010 at 20:09 Posted on Planning 0 19

I went for a little trial fake tan today to see if I'd want it done for the wedding.

I'm v pale naturally so dont want anything really dark looking as it would be a bit strange.

My question is (for those who have been for a salon fake tan before) - should my knuckles be almost black right now??? I'm a bit worried that this won't wash off in the morning!!!!

*****MORNING UPDATE****

Well, as suspected last night, I do have orange hands this morning. A little bit disappointed by this as I could have done that myself.....lol Have tried to scrub my knuckles to no avail so I'm hoping that by the time I have another couple of showers it wont be as bad in time for work tomorrow. The rest looks pretty good but TBH I'm thinking I won't bother with the hassle (or worry) of getting it done for my wedding. Think I'll go down the gradual tan route for the whole week before the wedding - less chance of these accidents happening. I bought the St. Tropez gradual tan a few weeks ago so once this tan wears off I'll try using the gradual one for a week and see how it looks.

Thanks girls for your help and support last night.

TEST 1 - Fake Tan Applied By Beautician. RESULT: fail

TEST 2 - Gradual Tan for 1 Week Applied by my Fair Hands. RESULT: coming soon!!!!!

Hey you, I have had quite a few fake tans, it will depend on which one you had, mine are usually spray one (feel like a car in a body shop!)

Yes you will go darker, when you wash off tomorrow don't use soap/shower gel, if your knuckles or ankles are still darker baby wipes work really well at removing. HTH x

The guide colour is only there as a guide (can look scary before you wash it off)

did they use less on your knuckles though? or mix it with moisturiser? same for your knees, elbows and heels - this skin absorbs the tan much easier and can go really dark so whoever put it on you should have known this in the salon??!!!

how long ago did you have it done? if you're worried mix lemon juice and salt (or use any exfoliator) and then scrub your knuckles (might hurt a little bit, sorry) to get it off!!!! xx

WSS except I would definately still use showergel/soap. It will help to remove the slightly more stubbon but loose tan & even everything out.

Ah thanks casinogirl - I haven't put fake tan on myself for years, usually just use the gradual ones.

Was a bit shocked by how 'dirty' I look right now. Just as well I'd planned a night in the house....lol

Didn't know about not using shower gel - thanks for the tip

On the shower gel thing this holds for the whole time you have the tan (not just when you wash it off for first time) - some shower gels can make the colour go funny.

st tropez have just brought out a new shower gel though that is meant for use with fake tan so won't make it go a funny colour if you want to use one.

i always top my hands tan up as well after the first couple of days or so as i wash my hands loads and so am terrified with ending up with the brown face, white hands look (nice)

LOL No problem, hey recommend not using shower gel as this can lighten the overall look, the water will look awful tomorrow but don't panic and just spend the eve fermenting lol x

hmmm I know there is a guide colour but I've licked my finger and rubbed a bit and it aint coming off!!!!

She actually put a extra bit on my knuckles at the end which I found strange but shes been doing it for years so I guess she knew what she was doing. She did moisturise these bits before hand and mixed some moisturiser with the fake tan too.

Had it done at 4pm today.

Thanks girls - just having a little panic here. Its really just cos I'm super pale normally and to go from that to this colour all of a sudden is quite a change!!!

I've never known anyone put extra on knuckles?!?

i do my tans myself (have become expert applicator after using it for about 10 years!) i did go to a salon once for a treat however the woman they gave me had never done it before and was using a cheat sheet with instructions how to fake tan! it was a nightmare...i was telling her how to do it! never went back!

sorry dont want to scare you gillsy...am sure she knew what she was doing and am sure it'll come out perfectly tomorrow. if not the lemon juice should do it.

    or keep scrubbing.

    or wear gloves!

    :-)

....a good salon will prepare you for the tan ie exfoliate and moisturise however if you go for a spray tan in a booth they won't do this.

either way i would recommend shaving your legs (and whatever else!) the day before and exfoliating and moisturising also the day before.

wear or take dark cotton clothes to wear after you get tanned also as it is a bit sticky and although it will dry pretty much straight away and won't really come off on your clothes you still wouldn't want to be wearing anything white or too tight either.

if you go for a spray tan this doesn't usually develop straight away so you'll probably just feel super moisturised after with a light sheen on your skin

if you go for the lotion option this will have a darkish guide colour so prepare to feel like a bit of an amazonian goddess afterwards if you're not used to it! also it can sometimes look a little bit streaky but it won't when you wash it off. just bear this in mind if the salon is in the middle of a busy shopping centre or something, you are going to have to walk out afterwards with the guide colour on! (its not that bad!!!!!!!)

they will tell you this in the salon but don't have any hot baths/go to the gym/get sweaty for about 12 hours afterwards so the tan develops properly

as for what to expect when you're there - places do differ but again if you're in a spray booth they will probably leave you to it but they will tell you exaactly what buttons to press (it's not like ross on friends - "I'M AN 8!!!!")

if you go for the lotion option this is applied by the therapist so bear in mind you will have to get naked (they'll either let you keep your knickers on or give you paper ones!!!) and they will apply it to your boobs too!

there is always the at home option and this is what i do myself. you can buy back applicators in boots (or ask OH to do it!!) but just remember to mix the lotion with lodas of moisturiser on your knees, elbows and hands. i recommend st tropez or Xen Tan

    hope this helps!!!!! xx

    Haha...i do love that episode!!!!

sorry i just reread my post and didnt mean to scare you off!!!!! its not that complicated really - just like moisturising really!!!!!

do let me know how you get on!!

nb you can usually find st tropez on ebay a lot cheaper than it is in boots just buy it from a seller that sells lots of it (usually salons) so its fresh stock and not just one that someone had randomly had lying around their house for ages

Im about to get shouted at but im thinking of possibly a few wee sunbeds before the wedding...like once/twice a week the few weeks before. either that or the johnstons holiday skin!!

o and maybe try going to the steamroom and spa pool at you local leisure centre and then a good scrub. the steam room and all softens the skin well and it scrubs off rather nicely! Smiley smile
