Urgent advice/help needed: Humanist services

18 March, 2009 at 18:14 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hey guys and gals,

I know I have barely been on here recently but there's been lots going on, which has come to a head today and im hoping you can all help?

Due to the explanation below I need to find out as much as possible about Humanist services, what they entail, marriage licences etc? I'm sorry to appear so ignorant, but I really don't know anything about them and we want to be armed with as much information as possible and explore all avenues.

deleted..

We have a meeting with them at 11am tomorrow...

I am off our for a run and then have a flat viewing so may not reply until later, but thanks in advance. ?

    I'm afraid I know nothing about humanist services but didn't want to r & r. That is absolutely terrible of your venue! You have every right to be really angry. I hope you get it sorted soon.

    Hi Bluelady

    Panic not!

    Humanists carry their own licence so you can marry anywhere that is 'safe and dignified', even your front room. So, if things go more tits up with your venue (or you just don't want to deal with them anymore after their disgraceful behaviour) you can have the ceremony anywhere pretty much.

    Here is a link to their site in Scotland;

    https://www.humanism.scot

    We are having a Humanist ceremony, primarily because registrars don't work a Sunday. But, having read their literature, I've found that what they hold to be true pretty much mirrors my beliefs (i.e. non-religious, but moral all the same).

    My OH was worried it was all going to be "brown rice and tofu" but you can choose exactly what goes into your ceremony and what you want to leave out.

    Here is some more information;

    You're gettng married in Scotland right? If so then the Humanist ceremony is fully legally binding (although not in England or Wales). All I needed to do was call a lady called Jess Fitzgerald (who is the co-ordinator for Scotland I think) and it is her that will be doing our wedding. One of us needed to join the Humanist Society. The reasons for this is that they need to ensure they marry members or 1) they can't get enough paople registered as Celebrants as there is a 'supply demand' ratio that need to stick to, and 2) registrars don't like them marrying folk that aren't members. As I say, if you read their literature you'll see they are a friendly, intelligent, non-cult type bunch of people. And membership is only £20 for a year and you don't need to renew if you don't want to.

    The fee is £250, sorry, can't remember if I paid a deposit. They have quite a few registered Celebrants that you can find on their site, so you should be able to find someone to conduct your ceremony on your date.

    And let us know how you get on!

    PS If you have wedding insurance would they pay out if your venue get dicky about giving you compensation?

    I'm glad MrsMcB2B could help with all that info, I was going to say check out your wedding insurance and get back all the money you have paid to the venue...that is awful (to be polite) what they have done on you and god knows who else they have left in the same situation!

    Keep us up to date ?

    Aw Carol what a horrible situation and a big BOO to the venue especially considering their reputation if I have the correct place. I'm sorry I can't help but all those links from MrsMcB2B will hopefully make things a lot clearer.

    How long do you have to go now?

    ? x

    I've not even had my first fitting but it is on 17th April. No wonder you are mad with the venue and quite rightly so. I'd be asking for compensation tbh as they have broken their contract although I'm sure they will have a clause somewhere which means they can get out of it but worth a try.

    My venue has sacked the wedding co-ordinator as he told us and other customers heaps of lies. One was that the gardens would be ready for pictures to be taken and there are no gardens at all going to be ready for another 3 years at least! I complained and they are paying for us to go to a nearly old castle for pictures but still I'm ragging that people think they can mess about with such an important day for couples.

    OMG at the room prices, I hope they refund all your guests that have been wrongly charged.

    Keep me posted on everything and hopefully you will get it sorted and have an even better ceremony now.

    xx

    Oh Carol, really sorry to hear they haven't resolved this. Thats really shocking! Can't help too much with any humanist info,except to say that I recently went to a humanist funeral - i know its not quite the same - but for what its worth it was a really nice, personal touching service, very unlike any other I've been to. It was obvious that the celebrant had spent a lot of time with the family and put a lot of effort into the content of the service. Hope you get it all sorted soon x
