Ushers Vs Groomsmen

HappyGreenDiamonds6606, 8 March, 2021 at 21:36 Posted on Planning 1 1
So, it's getting closer to having to ask our wedding party to be bridesmaids/groomsmen and we are having a slightly dilemma.

OH has 1x best man, 3x groomsmen. However we were thinking of asking one of the groomsmen to be an Usher however we are getting a little confused. Is there really a difference? Do they have matching attire to the groom and groomsmen? Do they stand with the groom? Do we just have the groomsmen and give one or 2 the job of usher? Or should all the groomsmen (with the exception of the best man) actually be called Ushers?

First off - you can call them whatever you like. As soon as they hit the reception and beer I tend to call them useless Smiley xd .

Actually its the other way around Usher is UK and grooms men US, but groomsmen has been used here for so long it doesn't matter.

I find mainly if it is a civil ceremony then they are called groomsmen and if it is a Church then they are called ushers. But traditionally for a Church you would only have 2 Ushers - but people may also want to include more of the grooms friends and family so the extras tend to be called groomsmen.

I come across a lot of weddings who say they are not having "traditional" things - not having Ushers but instead having groomsmen but in reality they are exactly the same and still all wear the same matching suits and do the same jobs.

As for what to call them - its totally up to you - doesn't matter what just so long as they do as they are told. In your case as there are 3 then I would call them all groomsmen, otherwise you are elevating 1 from the other 2. And yes usually they would all match.

Usually the groom will be slightly different than the rest - waistcoat in the example below - or sometimes just a different button hole.

Last picture 2 Dads, groom and best man and 3 ushers, or it could be 2 best men and 2 groomsmen. Getting quite popular to have more than 1 best man these days.
