Vegetarian main course ideas

FMG, 9 April, 2013 at 13:51 Posted on Planning 0 11

We have a meeting with our venue tomorrow to discuss our menu, we have already sorted out our meat option with them a month ago and they asked us to have a think about the vegetarian option to talk about tomorrow but I really can't come up with anything!!!

For starters we are having parma ham, sunblush tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella bruschetta on a bed of rocket with a balsamic glaze, vegetarian option is without the parma ham. The meaty main course is cannon of lamb on a bed of wilted spinach drizzled in a red current and thyme jus served with dophenoise potatoes, green beans with bacon lardons and viche carrots.

I want the vegetarians to have something 'special' not just a stuffed pepper or a risotto! Ideas needed please??? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'm afraid we've gone for a risotto! M is veggie, as is my mum and his parents, so it is a special risotto! We have gone for roasted butternut squash risotto with a baby herb salad and some sort of raspberry thing (?!) with pecorino cheese. I think it sounds lovely and M loved it! I think if you tell your caterer that you want something really special for the veggies too, and not just an afterthought (which I do agree, can sometimes be the case with vegetarian dishes at large catered events) then I am sure they will come up with some ideas for you.

Well I'm vegetarian and I had beetroot strudel for Sunday lunch at a Vintage Inn last week and that was lovely with veg, potatoes and parsnips as I always feel I get a raw deal for a Sunday 'roast'. Mushroom wellington is also one of my favourite. I'd say somethig with pastry as it makes you feel like you are having similar to the meat eaters and can help yourself to the vegetables and potatoes without something comletely different coming out for you.

    Hope that helps!

I don't have anything against risotto but I was of the opinion that it was what was offered to vegetarians quite a lot so I was looking for something a bit different, Gurzle your risotto sounds lovely and I like the idea of it being served with a salad and a dressing as it is difficult to make them look pretty.

I love the idea of mushroom wellington, is this similar to the mushroom pithivier HCWW?

I'm veggie and my caterer came up with a mediterranian vegetable lattice. A few of the meat eaters have gone for this too as they thought it sounded really nice.

So glad I found this post as I am unsure what to have as me veggie main! I'm a veggie and a fussy eater anyway, but there will only be me and one other vegetarian at our meal. I am thinking about having a risotto or a vegetable wellington. I would have just gone for pasta but wanted to make it a bit more special and thought pasta sauce might get split on my dress! I was at a wedding where I had a vegetable lasagna, which was really nice! but again I would be scared that the sauce would spill on my dress!

How about something using halloumi...perhaps some meditteranean inspired skewers with halloumi & marinated veg, griddled aubergines, with couscous or bulghar wheat. It's difficult to come up with something sophisticated as a lot of vegetarian dishes are quite rustic ! Paneer is also a nice vegetarian option- I love cheese ! I had a courgette flower stuffed with a mini french cheese at a posh restaurant once and it was really unusual. Why not google vegetarian restaurants and steal some ideas? x

Our veggie main is a goats cheese and onion marmalade pithivier - sort of a puff pastry pie. No-one has chosen it so far (I don't know many veggies) and I'm quite sad, as I've tried it and it's delicious!
