Veggie options!

Dee, 2 May, 2023 at 19:06 Posted on Planning 0 9
I’m getting married this summer and we’re having a formal meal for the wedding breakfast, and then a doner kebab (HTB’s fave food) van for late night food. There will be meat, chicken and falafel on the menu, and I need to pre-order the number of veggie (falafel) portions.

We only have 4 vegetarians (out of 250 guests) but I think some meat eaters will also choose falafel on the day! Any idea what good estimate would be? I’m thinking 15% but I really don’t have a clue!
Thanks

We are marrying this summer too and we are asking all our guests for their diet requirements and main meal choices. Not sure yet about the evening do but probably will do the same on the same formal invites that are going out imminently. I'd say ask em, if its not too much hassle, or do an online poll or something if you think they'd do it?! :-)

Thanks x yeah so we will be asking for dietary requirements on invites but wanted the kebab van to be more of a surprise as it’s a bit of a novelty and HTB is very known for his love of kebabs! An option would be just to have the falafel for those who have put veggie as a dietary requirement, but I wanted everyone to have the choice!

Thanks, yeah they suggested 10% but that felt a bit low to me, falafel can be quite popular! Especially as there will be a lot of meat on offer for the mains

When I’ve done orders for work events and what not before, I generally go for between a 1/4 and 1/3 being veggie, depending on what it is.
A lot of people will eat the veggie food, where as not everyone will eat meat. Chicken options usually are the most popular though.

Not sure if that helps. Personally I’d do at least 20%, depending on your crowd.
Not sure if you’re aware, but most people only cater to about 70-80% of the total number of evening guests btw, as some people from the day won’t eat or won’t eat much.

Thank you, yeah I think 20% makes more sense than the 10% our supplier suggested. We don’t have any separate evening guests (so they will have all had the dinner too), but they are supplying 1 kebab per guest

To be on the safe side, I would suggest asking the supplier to earmark portions for your named veggie guests. I recently went to a catered buffet event where some people went hungry because other people ate all 'their' food before they could get to the buffet.

That’s a good idea! Since there’s only 4 it should be pretty easy to ask the caterers to hold back portions for them. And then if the falafel runs out for other guests it’s not the end of the world

I think 20-30% sounds like a good amount for the veggie option. But I agree with others; make sure there is food held back for the vegetarians that can't eat something else.

Yeah, I’m not sure if 30% is too high if 99% are meat eaters! I guess that would mean there is a risk of lamb or chicken running out then, as it’s a large kebab so each person would only select one of the three options.

I guess as long we hold back portions for the veggies, then everyone else will have a choice of two if not three, which is probably fine!
