venison

Jemima Renrut, 27 November, 2012 at 22:18 Posted on Planning 0 56

Our venue offers venison as a main meal, having never tried it we have bought some for dinner this week, admittedly from the supermarket won't he the same but its a start. Now I mentioned this at work today and was pleasantly surprised by how many people have tried and like it. Now our venue only offers one main choice and a veggie/allergy option, so I'm just curious to what people think about serving a less common choice or to go with Sumat safer? I understand you can't please everyone but IMO venison is a more risky choice. (hypothetically) if we really like it, what would you do?

I would say have it, as I do love it (although it doesn't love me but that's another matter ?)

However, it is quite a controversial choice and I think more guests would leave it, and not eat it, as opposed to other red meats, like beef or lamb.

Solution is obviously to invite me to the wedding ?

I went with a safer option at out wedding.

Venison, like steak, can be served anything from blue (rare) to well done & everyone has it a different way. That being the case, I figured that at least 50% of people would have it served in a way they dont like.

Venison can be rather gamey which some people find too strong.

I like a huge range of foods, but as a wedding needs to cater for so many varied tastes & ages, I went for the safer options (from memory chicken or salmon for mains).

I'd be tempted to say you can't please everyone so just pick the meal that you both really like. Could you include the menu with your invitations and ask people to reply with whether they want venison or veggie option and at least then if people strongly object they can choose to have the veggie meal?

I'm a safe player. I've tried most things, but this meat really doesnt appeal to me.

What is the other option/s though for a meat?

Thanks everyone. There are of course still beef pork chick and lamb options which are safer. It's come up because we stumbled across it in the supermarket, had completely dismissed it at first. Then the positive responce at work made me wonder if I was missing out! So I wondered how the general population felt. We don't need to make our meal choices until next year, so if we do like we will try discussing it with family and friends too. I was just curious of hitched variety of opinions for my research lol.

I'm veggie but I know my OH would love to have venison. If you really fancy it then I'd go for it and offer the veggie option to anyone who doesn't like it.

If you really like it then have it, but how popular it is really depends on how the venue decides to serve it . Venison is a very lean meat, so when you are having a venison steak it really does have to be rare or medium rare- having it "well done" and it is just dry and chewy and awful!

We eat A LOT of venison, had it for tea tonight! (h2b is the real hunter gatherer..) and you can't beat it in stews but I'm really not that keen on it in steak form, to be a pleasant texture it has to be very bloody which can put people off, me included!!

And there will always be those who say they "won't eat bambi" no matter how delicious it is.

I dont eat red meat so i wouldnt have it, but if you made it clear that it was venison or veggie i'd happily have the veggie as it's me that's fussy! Wouldnt blame you for my issues!!!

Just make it clear beforehand, after spending all that money on catering you'd hate it if lots of people dont eat/like it!

    Have venison, it's delicious!

I'd also say that you should go for what you and your OH want and try not worry too much about other people. I always figure they can just have the vegetarian option, and even if they don't eat it, there's so much food at a wedding, it's not like they'll go hungry ?

I would LOVE it if I was a wedding guest where the meat was venison - it's gorgeous ❤️ You can make a cracking sauce out of the meat juices as well.

I love venison. If you like it I think you should choose it. I would. We are big foodies and the food is really important to us, so we will go with something we really love. If I went to a wedding and someone offered venison I would love it. Similarly, if I went to a went to a wedding and offered another less common choice that I had never tried, I'd go for it and take it as an opportunity to try something different. I have chicken every week, venison is a bit more 'special'.

We decided to go for a plain vege main as it meant that if people diddnt like the meaty option they could go for that? I ended up with the vege main at a wedding I went to last year as the main was duck. Diddnt bother me at all.

    I'm not a veggie but I won't eat Bambi, sorry. ?

Then again I won't touch Lamb either, anything from young animals basically. I know they're bred to be eaten but it's something that's never sat right with me.

I personally can't stand venison, but if you enjoy it for your tea, then have it. People who really don't like it will do as I would and either order the vegetarian option or manage on the potatoes and veg that come with it.

I would play it safe... I don't think I could eat venison and it doesn't appeal to me at all. I'd probably like the taste, but I find that if something seems weird to me, I can't eat it. Like black pudidng, I actually liked the taste but couldn't eat more than a mouthful as it was weird!

The last thing you would want would be to pay out a small fortune on gorgeous food and find that most of it wasn't eaten! x

For meat-eaters, we had a fish starter and lamb main, chosen at a menu tasting long after the invitations had gone out. As we were aware that maybe these weren't unanimous crowd-pleasers, we emailed everyone (only 60 odd guests) to offer them a choice between these or the chosen veggie options (or a combo).

Im a big meat eater and generally take my steak how it comes, although with choice ill go with medium rare but venison is just too strong for me but im not suprised how many people do like it. we have gone with chicken for our wedding main, mainly because its safe and id rather everyone enjoy their meal rather than have a split room of half eaten meats

    Cows are usually 2-4 years

Chickens are usually young, but if I do eat that I have Halal stuff. At least they get a good send off.

When is comes to meat / fish in general I try to steer away from cattle, anything I can connect to emotionally basically. Being a dog owner, and seeing how switched on he is, the way he reacts with other animals, it makes me a little more aware of what I'm eating.

But chicken and fish are so far removed from us as a species then I consider them fair game.

Edit: I notice there are two or three incidental puns present above, sorry about that, no jokes were intended.

That's interesting because you don't often hear people admit to this in a debate. Why should your ability to emotinally interact (or not) dictate what you eat? How do you know you can't emotionally interact with a chicken? Smiley smile
