Venue in Cumbria

WickyWack, 27 March, 2012 at 15:07 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi all!!

My other half and I are planning on getting married in Cumbria Aug/Sep 2013. We have scoured the internet for suitable venues are a really struggling to come up with anything suitable or that we want.

We would really like a laid back affairfor the reception, perhaps in an old village hall or barn to go with our tea party/country theme. We have a fairly low budget of about £5000 in all (for everything) but I think this is totally achievable! Fingers crossed!

Any ideas folks?

Lauren

    Hi Lauren,

    https://www.broadoakscountryhouse.co.uk/weddings/brochure-pricing/

We looked at this venue and discounted it purely on size ( i think max numbers is 60 ). Other than the lovely setting etc ,we loved it due to the it being a dog friend establishment and I had all sorts of visions of our white westie in a black bow tie and our golden retriever with a bright pink colour with a massive flower attached ?

I'm not sure what your numbers etc but they have several pricing options that could fall in with your budget, especially if you are willing to consider a weekday wedding or a day out of high season.

I am also getting married in Cumbria, but live out of the area and I started my search by googling "budget wedding venues in Cumbria" there was a few riverside pubs etc that came up but I don't recall any village halls etc, if that fails maybe an idea would be to try phoning round local parish churches to see if they have a hall they are willing to hire out, but beware of the cost of decorating it as well as the hire price as it might cost more in the long run.

https://www.broadoakscountryhouse.co.uk/ <<< just had to include this , its the Dog food menu including side orders and snacks !! ?, introduced by Molly the resident dog !..

    Anyway !!

Good Luck with your venue search ?

    Regards

    Hi Lauren,

    Listed a few venues we've visited;

Langdale Spa Hotel - Probably won't fit with your theme - restaurant used for reception is quite modern

Beechhill Hotel - On Lake Windermere, not for us but gorgeous location

Cragwood Country House - Again on Lake Windermere, lovely country feel, max reception guests is around 50

Merewood County House - Owned by the same people who own Cragwood, overlooking Lake Windermere, 60+ guests, currently our favourite venue!

Holbeck Ghyll - Amazing venue overlooking Lake Windermere, very pricey but does have packages available for smaller parties

Linthwaite House - Where we got engaged - amazing hotel but again very pricey as you need exlusive use, but there is an option for a day wedding

Keep us updated with how you get on, we still haven't decided on on our venue and we are on a similar budget to you!!

Hi I am a Cumbrian bride too!

Not sure where abouts in Cumbria you are, but there is the Saints Rooms in Cockermouth - its kind of like a nice church hall type place but is more wedding orientated. http://www.saintsrooms.co.uk/weddings/. Hope this is helpful xxx

I second the recommendation for the Saints Rooms in Cockermouth, as princesssaraht said it's a converted church hall in the centre of Cockermouth that you can decorate as you wish. Nick the owner is really great and is all about making the day your own and will be as involved as much or as little as you want, they can do catering for you if you wish (Nick regularly cooks at the Taste Cumbria events) or you can bring in your own caterers, etc. Nick also owns Winder Hall out in Lorton, which doesn't really sound what you're looking for.

Again, it totally depends on whereabouts you are or where you intend on getting married. There aren't many barns about that are available for hire for weddings in Cumbria, as we were looking for a similar thing when we started planning our wedding (we eventually went with Westlakes Hotel in Gosforth, completely the opposite of what we had envisaged but we loved the place and the owners!). We also looked at New House Farm in Lorton, who work closely with the Saint Rooms and Winder Hall - but their costs are quite steep (£2000+ for the hire of the barn alone, without carpets, tables, chairs or anything included) and they leave you entirely to your own devices to decorate the barn as you wish.

Have you tried widening your search a bit, say north Lancashire or West Yorkshire (depending on whereabouts you are or you're wanting to get married)?

    Hope this helps! x

There is always a youth hostel across the road!

    Plus plenty of b&b's nearby.

We have reduced out numbers to do it, but not by too much

Why not go for a drive, You said old village hall so if you take a drive through the villages something may pop out.

There are lots of hidden gems around.

    Thanks for the reply's everyone!

Were hoping for something in the Kirkby Stephen area or possibly in the village of Orton which is near Shap.

We'd like to avoid hotels if we can as were just not 100% comfortable with the idea of it being so structured and planned out..

Saying that, were are considering Tullie House at Carlisle and also Morland Hall..

Last night we were offered the use of a field to put a marquee in near the church at Church Brough (near Kirkby Stephen) which is where my OH's parents live..

I really like this idea, but I don't want my parents to feel left out with it being in the village where my OH parents live or to feel like they have no connection to the venue, but I'm sure they won't. I think I'm just being paranoid.

The only problem with this is where would everyone stay? There are a couple of B&B's I suppose....

    Hi Wickywack (fab username BTW!)

We used to be based in the lakes and still get back there for weddings every now and then so can recommend a few places to have a look at.

Loweswater Village Hall is worth a look and I think would be well under budget, the views are absolutely spectacular but you'd have to sort your own catering etc.

New House Farm at Lorton is great too, you get the use of a barn and it's basically a blank canvas for you to do what you want with. We've covered one wedding there who kept it fairly minimal, and another who did the whole works with putting in carpets, drapes etc so there's loads of scope there.

Another is Belmount Hall near Hawkshead, it's a fantastic venue with a couple of rooms you can use for your reception and it does have about 10 bedrooms as well. Not sure where it would come in price wise but it's again a fairly rustic type venue.

Hope that helps, feel free to drop me a message if you have any queries about any of those ?

If a marquee is something you are interested in, then why don't you get some advice and pricing about it to see if it is an option, The company I've contacted about entertainment hire out marquees and pretty much everything you'd need to go into it, The guy I spoke with ( Steve) was really friendly and helpful, so if you have approx guest numbers I'm sure he'd give you advice on what you need and pricings.

Check out local B&Bs and hotels in the area online there is probably more than you think.
