Venue refusing monies back - wedding July 21

RomanticGreenBridesmaid30470, 16 of October of 2020 at 16:48 Posted on Planning 0 3
Hi all,

We are due to marry July 2021. We feel that it is highly unlikely that it will be going ahead and if so, surely it will only be for 30 people? Right now the maximum number for weddings it’s 15 people, this includes officiants and any other suppliers we have chosen. We are currently in dispute with the venue as the co tract we signed last February is surely void or should be under some scrutiny due to the current situation. Seen as the number went from 30 to 15 then, come May, if the situation is getting better, the number would rise back up to 30 again? At our wedding, we chose to have 50 people in the day and 200 on the evening - the contract we signed was under those conditions.
Is anybody else having trouble with their venue over refunds? It would be interesting to see who is in the same boat as us!

I think your situation is complicated by a lack of any forward guidance on the future of any restrictions so at the minute from the venues point of view I am guessing that they can only proceed with a wedding 10 months away as if everything will be going ahead as contracted, for the time being.

I can see how they are thinking but it makes no sense because if they wait until restrictions are announced to - say 15 then as I see it they will have to offer you a new date, but then leaving your old date too short notice to fill with a wedding that are willing to go ahead with 15. So they may as well move yours now so they can then re book the old date. But if you move now then you may have to pay extra for the new dates prices.

Just a reminder for everyone that in England 15 does not include those working at the wedding (officiants and any other suppliers)

Thank you for your response. Yes it is a difficult situation. Weddings are planned so far in advance, that the guidance is not helpful for us who want to plan our special day.

Our registrar gave us that information about them being part of the 15 so sorry if that is wrong.

The old rules when it was 30 was that it DID include officiants and photographers but since the change to 15 it does not include anyone working at the wedding.

Your registrar needs to read this https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-for-small-marriages-and-civil-partnerships/covid-19-guidance-for-small-marriages-and-civil-partnerships

Its disappointing that someone in a position of "authority" does not know the rules soley directed at them. But on the other-hand if that is their own separate rules at that venue then you have to abide by those.
