Take a step back and instead of thinking, “home or abroad?”, both you and your partner imagine what the key parts of your perfect wedding would look like. Then together, go through your perfect wedding lists and sort each thing into non-negotiable, and desirable.

So it might be for you that you both put “celebrating with our friends” on your dream wedding list, but then put it as a desirable rather than an essential. You might put “great nana by my side” as a non-negotiable.

I had the same concerns with some family on both sides coming to our wedding and we've actually sat them down and addressed their potential 'bad behaviour' and said if we get a whiff of it on the day they'll be thrown out - it sounds a bit mad but it's our day and we want it to be perfect for us. I am also of the mind that on your anniversary each year, you want to remember all the good that happened on the day, rather than things like 'so and so ruined this' or 'remember when X ruined the speeches' etc. People like that have been struck off our invites just because we don't want to take the risk!

Totally understand the sentimental value of having family present, but at the end of the day you two are the ones it involved and IF you two are paying for your own wedding then the people/guests getting upset really don't have any say either way and regardless of them being disappointed they should have your happiness and needs above their own. I've been so surprised by some people getting upset at our choices but I've even said to some of them, if they want to pay for the extra guests to come then that's what they have to do!

It's totally your day. What do you want? That's the day your remember. You won't be able to please everyone anyway.

People will be upset no matter what you do. So put yourself first and think if every single one of my guests was ok with it.. what would I do? And definitely go with that. Asking people to go abroad, you’ll knock down the guest list and always have a better time with nearest and dearest. Whatever makes you happy, even if that’s a small wedding with 5 people. We’ve gone for a Vegas elopement, we don’t want a big wedding/the stress or the £££ (although lots of people have said they want to come we’re not expecting any) and then we’re going to have a low key party to celebrate with friends when we get home (local bar, friends on the decks and whack some money behind the bar) and maybe a quieter meal for our parents/close family. Some people have already expressed their disappointment but suits us perfectly. I did make a list as someone else suggested with various ideas and pros and cons for each just to help cement my decision!
