Vertigo

OB, 22 November, 2012 at 12:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Apparently I have it. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

The doc has given me pills to try to control the dizziness, but as he'd squidged me in because I begged to be seen today he was in a rush and didn't really say much.

He did advise me to not drive which means I have to be off sick as driving is pretty much what I do all day.

I have it, seemingly randomly. I have an appointment with the specialist at the hospital tomorrow as the 3 different types of drugs that were supposed to help didnt seem to work. Mine is something to do with my ear canal though.

I had an episode of a type of vertigo called BPPV following a bad cold a few years ago. It was where some kind of "stones" in the ear (I'm sure there's a more accurate medical word for them!) dislodged due to the cold. I saw a specialist at the hospital who moved my head back and forth a few times and it fixed it.

My mum suffers from "normal" vertigo and has tablets to control it. It's not a constant thing, but she can feel when it's coming on and just takes tablets for it.

Oh, so I can’t do much about it then? Will it just go away on it’s own? I’ve never had anything like this before.

Oh my goodness flora, I don’t think I could cope with a year of this!! You poor thing!

I did have a bad cold a couple of weeks ago so hopefully it’s just temporary.

My Mum, Nan and Sister both get this. My Mum gets it every few months and she has some tablets that she takes for it. My Sister had a bad episode a couple of years ago and was off work with it for weeks. On her first day back at work she rang me in tears saying she'd gone dizzy and spun the car. Luckily she didn't have an accident. So I would definitely take the Doctors advice! I really feel for you, it sounds horrible!

My Nana had it once I am sure they had to spin her around while she was lay down on some sort of contraption and she had to stay up right for 24 hours...sounds strange but I am sure it is what happened!

Willing to eat my own hat if I am wrong...hope you get sorted properly OB.

Vertigo is a symptom, not a diagnosis. You've most likely got an inner ear infection. He's given you drugs to control the symptoms while the infection clears. I'd go back in a couple of weeks if it hasn't resolved.
