Videographer - is it worth the money?

Anonbride, 14 June, 2022 at 19:16 Posted on Planning 0 11
Initially we were not gonna go for a videographer because they are PRICEY! But I’ve recently seen a few people’s wedding videos and they do look lovely… wondering if people feel it’s worth it? Anyone regret not getting one or vice versa?

I personally don’t think it’s worth it as I don’t know anyone who has watched it again! My sister said she barely looks at their wedding album and I’m sure many people are the same. Life just gets in the way! We are having a photographer from bridal prep to first dance and that’s enough photography for me!

I also wasn't going to get a videographer, until I saw the video at a friends wedding, which captured moments that were just beautiful. My friend said it was good to watch back things that they had missed whilst getting photos done and also to see the little moments that they hadn't realised had been captured on video.

I spoke to a few people I knew who didn't get one and they all said they regretted it. Mainly because the day goes so fast and there is so much going on there were things they missed that they wish were on video.

Because of this I have now booked one and included in the price I get a full days coverage, all the uncut footage, a 30sec Instagram video and 1min video, plus the full 10min cut video, uncut speeches, first dance and vows. I've also paid a little extra to have a video guest diary, so my videographer will go round to all my guests and ask them to say a little something.

This is exactly why I'm tempted to get one! FH thinks it's a waste of money but I think the speeches and the vows would just be so lovely to have on video...

I don't know anyone who has watched theirs. I'd only go for one if you have family who can't be there.

We have a video of ours, but only because it was a Covid wedding and we were live-streaming for the people who couldn't be there. They really appreciated it, but we never watch it and probably never will.

We didn't do it as felt it was an expense that was not justified, however, having now had our day I wish we had! It all goes by so quickly and whilst we have amazing pictures I feel there are some moments that would have been better caught on video. The speeches were so amazing and I wish we had them on film and the I DO moment, as i don't remember any of the ceremony Is personal choice, but I do think if you can stretch it then do it. Maybe ask your photographer if they offer it or can recommend someone locally who they have worked with before so you know you are getting a good one

"Maybe ask your photographer if they offer it or can recommend someone locally who they have worked with before so you know you are getting a good one."

The problem is that although I come across them from time to time at a wedding, I don't get to see the result so its difficult for me to recommend because if I do and they are bad then it is my reputation.

I could ask to see the finished product but that may only be so I can reach out to them with the intention of forming a loose partnership where I would actively promote them - and they would promote me in turn, in those circumstances as a wedding couple it would be prudent to be a little cautious in thinking - am I being recommended this person because they are good or because they have an arrangement between them.

That's good advice... we were debating asking our photographer if there was anyone they recommended to start getting a sense of actual cost in our wedding area but it's good to be cautious here!

Our other, somewhat risky idea, was to reach out to the local university and see if any recent filmmaking grads that were interested in going into weddings/events might be up for doing this for cheaper than someone with more experience.

By all means ask your photographer - I get asked but I do not actually come across that many and then as I said I do not get to see the result. I have asked a few couples in the past but they have been waiting months for the finished vids and I just end up moving on or forgetting about it as its not a priority for me.

Quite often I see a dedicated enthusiastic guest who has been given the informal task and I always make an effort to help them get the right angles and give them a heads up on what is happening next.

In a Church sometimes they just set up a camera and let it run for the vows and the same for the speeches, a proper vid guy will have you miked up though.

There is a company that hires you the camera and they will edit, cant remember their name.

I’m wondering the exact same thing about asking a local university so if you do end up going down this road please let me know how you get on!

FH is in the same boat as yours and isn’t sold on having a videographer and I do agree with him about the additional cost but if we could do it for less then it’s something we would definitely consider. So many people say they regret not having one xx

We haven't married yet but were on the fence like you guys. I think it depends from person to person on whether they rewatch or not. My friends say her daughters love watching it which I think is cute.

We decided to go ahead mainly because we would like the option to watch back and hear the voices and actions of more elderly family members in the future. In your day to day you often take photos but rarely take videos so we just decided it would be nice to have the footage even if we don't watch it all the time at least we have the option.

Really interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on this... We're going down to Cornwall in a few weeks and meeting with our photographer, so will use that as a jumping off point to do some investigating and report back on what we find out!
