Vintage tea party for a hen do?

Bughall01, 13 September, 2013 at 13:58 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hi, I'm thinking of starting my own vintage tea party, specialising in hen parties. However a few people I have mentioned it to are dubious of the business this would receive. It would entail coming into someone's home or venue and decorating a room or hall with chair covers, sashes, a treat table with sweets, goody bags, a cake if desired. Then place settings on the main table with vintage china and tea pots for tea and sandwiches to be served with cakes and scones for after. A proper 1920's feel... Would this be something anyone would want as a low key hen party or a hen party to have with the older and younger generation that won't go mad in a club or pole dancing?

I would do this, YES! I'm hoping to find somewhere to go for a tea party, would be lovely if I could have it in my own home!

As a 23 year old B2B (only mention age as you have) I would much prefer this to a clubbing night out. Great idea!

This is something I would definitely like, and fingers crossed along the lines that my bridesmaids have donefor my hen do (it's a suprise). The only thing I would say is it would depend on cost, as it is quite low key, so it needs to have an edge on going out to a venue that does this already/ be much cheaper in my mind anyway. A lot of hen do's seem to incorporate the vintage tea party theme/ afternoon tea with something else as well during the day.

Yes! I would love this. My mum even suggested something like this and said we could have it in the garden at her and step dads house.

It would be something I would love organising and buying bits and bobs for myself, but in reality, it would make so much more sense to be able to hire someone in to do it all and supply the bits and then take it away afterwards.

Vintage everything is so 'in' now I can't imagine it wouldn't do well.

I've been to two afternoon tea parties as part of a hen do and I think if you have scrummy cakes and give it a very nice personal touch it could be a good business.

I think it's a lovely idea, but being practical, you'll need to work on it to make a viable business, and I doubt you'd realistically make a living from it.

The afternoon tea concept is fab but is not new, and there are plenty of places where you can already do hen parties with afternoon tea (I went to a fab one at Drink Shop & Do http://drinkshopdo.com/Drink,_Shop_%26_Do/Drink,_Shop_%26_Do_%E2%80%94_Cafe_Bar_Kings_Cross.html) - so you would have to be cheaper than them, or your service would have to be SO much better that it would be worth any extra money.

Having it in people's homes is a lovely idea, but if hens want a tea party at home they could just do it themselves. You will again have to work out how to price yourself reasonably whilst having the quality that would make it worth them spending money on you rather than DIYing.

Have you worked out what your costs might be? There'd obviously be a largeish initial investment to buy all the venue decorations, table linen, vintage china and cutlery, and you'd probably need to replace bits fairly regularly. You'd also have to cover costs of all your ingredients and your transport/logistics costs - would you be able to fit everything for an afternoon tea bash in your current car, for example? Would you need food hygiene qualifications? How many tea parties could you realistically run (you couldn't really do more than one a day and are likely to be mostly booked for weekends rather than every day) and how many would you need to run in order to recoup the cost of your china? Will your partner/children/friends/family object if you are suddenly away every Saturday?

Sorry if I'm being a bit of a buzzkill, but I think it's important not to get caught up in how lovely the idea sounds if the practicalities aren't going to make it worth it.

Thank you everyone for your positive replies. I have thought about the practicalities. It won't be a huge profit making company as that's not what I would be doing it for. My overheads will be low as it will only be myself in the company. I already have a large car to transport the stock and have a food and hygiene certificate. My husband owns his own company so we know the highs and lows of starting your own business. The parties will be a weekend event and will be within certain areas close to me. They will last 3/4hrs which includes the setting up and taking down. I know people can do this themselves but people have busy lives and and jobs etc so this would hopefully be reasonable enough in cost to warrant getting someone else in to do it for them and tidy up after them.

Thanks for all your points, I have thought of all of them realistically but what I do need is something that makes me stand out to all the rest! Thats what I need my thinking cap on for otherwise why choose me?

    thanks again everyone Smiley smile
