Vow planning

Hannah, 3 of October of 2022 at 14:57 Posted on Planning 0 2

I've watched quite a few civil wedding ceremonies in the last few days, and I've found that all of the couples have different vows being read out by the registrar. Does the registrar plan the vows to read out to you? do you create the vows you want and give them to the registrar to read out (other than the legal ones)? Does each registrar have different vows they like to use?

Hi, once you've given notice, and everything is booked in you will get some kind of form to complete from your Registrars. This will include a space for you to put in any additional vows you may wish to say in addition to the required legal vows, some registrars may have examples for you to help you select some in an information brochure - you do not have to have any extra, and can write your own. On ours we got a checklist of questions to fill in to help structure the ceremony and approve choices. This usually includes things such as:

Bridal party members who will enter with the bride

Live/recorded music choices (they need to ensure music has no religious connotations)

Copies of any readings and who will read them

Copies of any additional vows you wish to say (they need to ensure these have no religious connotations)

How you wish to be introduced at the end

We've then booked a meeting to chat through these 1 week before to ensure everything is fine.

There's lots of good articles online about selecting vows, and good brochures/info packs from various registrars online if you have a look to help you know what to expect. Good luck!

We have just returned our ceremony plan to the registry office. We got it around 10 weeks before and had 4 weeks to complete it. There were sections for the legal part of the vows where we had 3 choices that we had to pick from. Then there was a part we could personalise for our promises and giving rings. They gave us 4 examples for each or we could write our own and attach as a separate file.
